700r4 to T-5 swap in my '59 Apache help

Hello all,
My '59 Apache has a SBC & 700r4 transmission. I have found a good Borg Warner T-5 out of a Mustang that I'm wanting to swap in. I mostly want to shift gears. I'm not hard up for OD, as I just run around town in this truck. I'd be fine with a Muncie, but the OD sounds nice, and this T5 is the right price ($200)! It's out of an '85 Mustang that had a 3.8 liter V6. Originally I thought that it was out of a 5.0 V8 Mustang. It is a World Class transmission. Codes are as follows:
1352 238 C2352

The 1352 = Borg Warner T5

238 = Mustang 3.8 V6

And, I think that the C2352 on the tag is the date code being:
C23 = March 23rd
5= year (1985?)
2= shift (2nd shift)

What do I need to do to complete this swap? Truck was originally a standard, but I will need to source a new clutch pedal and bracketed that it will hinge on. I will need some adapters, but I'm sure that the hot rod guys have this fingered out! Might be a good question to go ask on The HAMB!! any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: 700r4 to T-5 swap in my '59 Apache help

I have a Muncie bellhousing, clutch, clutch cable, clutch pivot ball, basically everything to install a Muncie, except a Muncie. Some of these parts may help. I got everything expect the Muncie out of a '69 Camaro. I've seen some adapter plates tat appear to be for Muncie bellhousings. Anyone have any experience with this swap? 😁

Re: 700r4 to T-5 swap in my '59 Apache help

You don't want to swap the Mustang 6 cylinder T5. The V8 trans is an OK swap with adapters. The 94-97 trans is easier to adapt they say using two adapter plates. I've got one of these that came out of a C3 Corvette I have pondered putting in my C2. But the 3.35 first gear for the Mustang trans isn't a good fit IMO for a big block and 3.73 rear gear that I have.

The GM T5 from a V8 is the best swap but they have never been common. The V8 trans with 4.3 V6 tailhousing from Astro Van is ideal. This is out there if you will search because they are not super common swaps just due to overall parts availability.

Google is your friend on this. Just search T5 swapping.

My advice, FWIW, is to pass on that tranny. Not all T-5s are created equally. If you want one then get one from a V-8 car.

Re: 700r4 to T-5 swap in my '59 Apache help

Thanks guys! I kinda figured that the V6 transmission wasn't going to be what I wanted. I was told by the owner that he thought that it was out of a 5.0 mustang. I was surprised to look it up and see that it was from a V6. I thought that maybe the World Class version would be stronger. I've googled and read (a lot on Jalopy Journal!) and seems that this would be a tough swap, anyway. But, thought that it might work well for my light '59, without too much power. But, sounds like I should pass this one up!

Re: 700r4 to T-5 swap in my '59 Apache help

If you want a stick shift, I don't think it would be all that difficult. It seems to me that the hardest thing would be working out the clutch linkage, mechanical or hydraulic, and of course the pedal set up.

Lugnutz65 is the expert on the board on T5's. He has a site for it. He has a lot of info. Great member.
