65 c10 shortbed stepside rearend swap...need suggestions
I'm in need of some input for a rear end in my 65 C-10 Shortbed Stepside...I gotta replace it and I'm not certain what rearend is a good fit for it. I need something that's good for highway travel and somewhat newer than the '67-'71 rearends that I've heard will fit. The guy I bought it from said that he thinks the rearend on it now is from an s10, but he wasn't sure and the axle housing is warped due to somebody doing a crap weld job on the track bar.
Any input and/or suggestions are welcome. Thanks!! |

Is your truck 5 lug? It looks like a truck 12 bolt from 73 to 82 or so. I would build a truck 12 bolt for a trailing arm truck (65 to 72) and do an axle swap if needed and you can put what ever gear you want in it. If you like the ratio of the one you have those gears will go right in it. This will give you the best fit, a straight bolt in and easy availability of parts. Who ever welded it should be banned from welding.

Yeah it is a 5 lug. I was hoping to find an easy swap without much building or replacing anything unless its the gearing in the diff.

Lol is that trac bar cut and welded back together with rebar? Any reason you want newer than a 67-71? I went with a 12-bolt from a 69 suburban that fit nicely. It was the same width (63") as the Dana 60 it replaced.

hahaha yeah that's rebar lol
My truck is in GA and I am in CA. My dad and brother in law will be doing the swap and I want them to not have too much work in getting it done. It is 63". I guess I could go with a 12 bolt from those years. Would I be able to take the gearing from the current diff and put it in the new one that I find? That's assuming that gearing is in better condition. Also, I just thought it would be easier to find a new rear end from a Pick A Part. Last edited by reecetas7196; 03-09-2017 at 02:55 PM. |

65-69 12 bolt coil spring. Change the axles to 5 lug or redrill existing.

Re: 65 c10 shortbed stepside rearend swap...need suggestions
I put a craigslist ad up for a 12-bolt from those years and had a couple of emails within a day or two.
For the axles I ordered CPP conversion axles to go to a 5x5 pattern. Was pretty straight-forward. It was 3.73 gears already, but I took it to a shop to have them check it out, and they ended up swapping in a new gear set as the stock ones were really worn. Usable, but worn, so I said go ahead and do it. |

Depends on your trans and tire size.

Re: 65 c10 shortbed stepside rearend swap...need suggestions
That is quite the cobbles mess there. No, 3.73 gears are not very highway friendly unless you have tall tires and or a OD trans. With a typical 1:1 high gear trans, you may want a 3.07 gear. You may get lucky and find a '65-'71 12 bolt with 3.07 gears, but doubtful. A '65 to early '70 12 bolt will be 62" wide. The late '70-'87 10 & 12 bolts will be 63.5" wide. The '73-'82 12 bolt or '79-'87 10 bolt will be more likely to have a 3.07 gear. But with those differentials, the trailing arm mounts and a panhard bar mount will need to be welded on, but it needs to be done correctly.

With the members we have here from Georgia I bet you can find what you need there. Upgrade your membership and post a wanted ad in the parts section. Have you Dad check craigslist regularly. Lots of ways to do this and it can all be bolt in.

Just the premium level. If you are going to stay with these trucks its worth every penny.
