Good price on Carb?

Hello all, Just made a 1500 mile trip from TX to PA in my 72. At 130 miles from destination I started smelling fuel. When I stopped at a rest area it died and I almost did not get it started. I am pretty sure the floats stuck open and was flooding. I was able to get it the rest of the way home but it flat out would not idle, then all of a sudden about 40 miles from destination it was all fine and runs great.

I need a new carb anyways, even though this one works fine (most of the time) the filter housing on the front is buggered up and the housing needs to be replaced on the carb side.

Does anyone have a rebuilt they want to sell or know of a good shop that has rebuilt carbs reasonable? I found some on Amazon for 300 shipped. Seems fairly reasonable since they are 400 on Ebay.

What engine ? what carb ? When the floats stick you can tap on the top of the carb and they will free up , sounds like you need a fuel filter and not a carb

If you do need a quality remanufactured carb, I got a National Carburetors remanufactured Quadrajet on Amazon for $240 with free shipping. They do a good job with the remanufacturing process and they're ready to run right out of the box.

I have a new fuel filter under the cab between the tank and the carb. The one that goes in the carb can not be used anymore because of buggered up threads. Whoever rebuilt it before used one of those tapered fixes that even messed it up worse, so the carb should be replaced just to get a new body so the internal filter can be refitted.

Both are also way competent on Q-Jets. I buy my kits from Cliff. He puts stuff in the that you actually need, and will talk to you on the phone, if you have problems. I didn't; I just happened to get him on the phone when I called to get a kit.

Either Cliff, Mark or Ken could fix you up with a way better carburetor than Amazon's suppliers, unless they are buying from these guys. If you need to have the throttle body drilled and bushings installed (a usual repair on a really old carburetor) you can have that done locally, or by the above-mentioned guys (even Cliff!) on a lot shorter turnaround time.

Edit to Add- get Cliff Ruggle's book on the Q-Jet, if you like to know what to do to that carburetor, and would like to know what a rebuilder might do to get a carb out the door (like gluing the filter nut so that it doesn't leak, after a ham-handed "mechanic" over-tightened that nut. The Q-Jet is a great carburetor, if treated correctly. I have the original on my truck, and it works great. I've rebuilt it twice- once when my father-in-law owned the truck, and then again a few years back, after my wife inherited it.

I just purchased a 600 cfm edelbrock last year
Runs great. $334 through summit with free shipping. For me it's worth an extra $100 to get a new one over a reman.
FYI 750 cfm is too much for stock 350.

The carb could be the least of your worries.
If it was indeed flooding for over 1200 miles, then you could have scored cylinder walls and bearings too.
That extra fuel doesn’t lubricate anything.
Did you check or change the oil yet?

rockyrivermark. If you look up the cfm of a stock quadrajet you will see that most flowed 750cfm plus. One thing about a vacuum secondary carb is they are very forgiving and will only give the engine what it needs. I looked numerous places all of which said a stock quadrajet will flow 750 some with bigger primaries flow 800.

It only flooded for about 20 miles. As soon as I started to smell the fuel I pulled over, then I could hardly get it started. Finally cleared up after another 20 miles.. I hope I did not do too much damage.. I emailed Bob in Phily Led Zepp. He is in my backyard at the moment since I am here with the truck on holiday. Looks like I am starting a new job in Denver so another 1500 mile journey is in my cards. Would be nice not to have to worry about the carb.

One thing about Q-jets remans, is that they are a 30+ year old carb. The throttle shaft bores will usually need a rebush job. Not all of the ebay cats do that. I'd definitely stick with one of the reputable cats mentioned in this thread for a rebuilt/reman Q-jet.

Electric choke a big improvement IMO over the divorced choke. I have a Jet Stage II on my Jimmy and I bought a Summit reman for my '86 K30 with it's 454.

My most recent carb purchases have both been for hot rodded 427 and they are both electric choke Holley 750 double pumpers.

But for daily driving/street/tow performance it's damn near impossible to beat a Q-jet.

I had Bob Stone rebuild the original Q-jet on our K10. He did a wonderful job. It runs great and looks better than new. Bob builds the carburetor to match the engine size and cam. Bob's phone number is 267-467-6018.

Yes! It is important to calibrate the carburetor for the conditions it will see. I used to work at a parts store back in the late '70s, and we sold a replacement Q-Jet that was "universal"- if you came in the door and needed a Q-Jet, that is the one you got. If you went to a distributor of said carburetors, you would get the one for your application. They cost more money for a reason- that calibration costs money. I can bet that a lot of people had trouble with ours. I put one on my '65 Chevelle with 327, a fair amount of cam and headers, and jet and metering rod changes were necessary to make it run right. You won't necessarily get a calibrated carburetor from a rebuilding mill/over the counter.
