I am not double sure but the 5249 number looks like it could be it. If indeed that is the case the motor you have is not a 5.3 but I'm not sure of the second number. Is it out of a 2004? If that is the case that is what I've gathered from those numbers you've posted.

Never mind me I just read the title of your post completely and see that the numbers I've read are wrong. The v lead me to think it is 4.8 but the 10th digit would have to be 4 for 2004 instead you say it is out of an 06 so I have no idea what that second group is for. Sorry.

On the last number you had posted I looked at the V [4.8] and the tenth number on the vin#[8 being the V] it would mean that it was 04 so that is why I retracted even to pretend to know anything.

They have a cast number on the back of the block but all it shows is it could be a 4.8 or 5.3

Ya, know I've built a ton of these trucks[99-07] and don't remember seeing a partial vin number on them. now some times I've seen a paper tag that has a bar code on it that matches the one above the vin# on the firewall but if the truck has any age to it that tag will have been lost to time. jim

I believe the vin number is located under the cylinder head on the driver's side, see the attached picture.... kinds looks like a "Dot Matrix" set of numerals......

Re: Does anybody know where the partial vin is on a 2006 4.8/5.3 motor

Ca you not get the vin number from the guy you bought it from. If needed [and sometime it is] i am able to provide the vin number to any part I sell. Of course he may not have junked out the truck and not have access to it. But like I said I have the vin to everything i junk out so there could be no question as to the proper paperwork and ownership of the stuff. I don't sell a ton of drivetrain stuff and don't buy the stuff to junk out for public use anyways[ When I buy one it is mainly for the sheetmetal cause that what I'm in constant need of] so my methods are a little odd on the way I do stuff anyways.
So maybe he could provide a vin or partial so you can figure this puzzle out. For what it is worth[ I know that is not much] the 4.8 is really hard to tell the difference from a 5.3 in every way except fuel use. They sure seem to get better gas mileage than the 5.3's but it is a lot to do with the tune I have a rcsb 02 with a 5.3 that [had ] Flowmasters I replaced with factory type pipes and spacer and tune it gets 26MPG on the freeway with a/c on. But I wouldn't hesitate to use a 4.8 in a build unless you paid 5.3 money for it. see I get 850-1000 bucks for a complete 4.8 with trans and PCM and harness. The 5.3 is around 1250 for the same but that is because of area and other factors.

My last post in no way should be considered an ad for something for sale I was just posting that information for comparisons sake and for the sake of information. If anyone is taking it the wrong way please do not I in no way want to break any rules of the forum

I read somewhere on this board or LS1tech that the only way to distinguish between a 4.8 and 5.3 (upon inspecting at a yard/craigslist) would be to pull a spark plug and scope the engine...or something like that. It's been 6 months since I looked at that so I have ingested and forgotten a lot since then.

yeah, having a copy of the title of the vehicle to show that it is not "Stolen/Misappropriated" will ease things with the law dogs, I know that for a fact because I was looking into building a kit car, and the regulations regarding licensing a specialty built/street rod requires all reciepts/documents to all major parts sources in order to facilitate title requirements, at least with regards to Missouri state regs. but, hopefully, you won't have to worry about that where you live.
Good luck!

Re: Does anybody know where the partial vin is on a 2006 4.8/5.3 motor

Vortec 6.0L differences: 1999 to 2000 6.0L's were all iron headed. Also the crankshaft flange extends out away from the rear engine cover by an inch or so. These two year 6.0L's WILL NOT bolt up to 4L60E transmissions from 99+ Trucks due to lengh of crankshaft flange. Starting in 2001, all 6.0L's switched to aluminum heads with the '317' casting in the corner. Also the crankshaft flange is now almost flush with the rear engine cover. 2001+ 6.0L's that were mated to 4L80E's will have FLAT flex plate and will have a spacer between flex plate and crankshaft. The LQ9 6.0L was now also available in high end vehicles such as the Silverado SS, Caddy Escalade. The LQ9 sported flat top pistons to raise compression, and the LQ4 had slight dish. Both engines used the same 317 casting. You can also look at VIN number, 8th digit U = LQ4, N = LQ9.

Agreed, my understanding was that 4.8 "generally" motors used flat top pistons and the 5.3's used dished pistons and many 4.8's have been passed as 5.3's because the are so hard to distinguish from one another. I can't say how far that went in the production lines over the years. I'm certain another one of the LS guys will chime in.

I believe if you look at the tab for the head gasket the tab will be marked 4.8. if its blank it is a 5.3.
