Blitz Black + Rustoleum CHEAP-O paint job

I couldn't resist. A nice Paintshop job was not in my budget. I have seen a lot of nice pics of cars painted with John Deere Blitz Black paint, especially MARKEB01's truck! I really like the Satin Black look.

Also have seen a number of folks who used Rustoleum to get a nice job.

What really made the difference was MARKEB01's suggestion to use an Auto Enamel reducer to "upgrade" the paint. On this job I used NANOSKIN Slow Reducer and Valspar Enamel Hardener.

The Blitz Black was mixed 8:1:1 as suggested by Mfg. The magic mix for me on the Rustoleum (Sunrise Red) was 8:3:1, and it really flowed out smooth. I used a Harbor Freight Purple HVLP gun, 40PSI. Sprayed over a Lacquer based primer.

This is the first time I sprayed a car or even attempted bodywork. I am happy with the outcome, and the body finally matches the interior.

Weather's been crappy since I finished, so I will post more pics of it completely re-assembled after I get a chance to wash it and take better pics.

Re: Blitz Black + Rustoleum CHEAP-O paint job

Having just recently bought the Blazer and having its paint as bad as it it, this is a great result and idea.

I have Followed Marks truck and build for years as I have a 66 as well.

Your outcome certainly looks like a success to me.

Well done !!

Re: Blitz Black + Rustoleum CHEAP-O paint job

Looks awesome! I'm also doing a super budget paint job, probably using implement paint because its what I can get easily locally and is cheap enough. I'm also using the purple HVLP gun - thank you for posting your setup and awesome work.

Re: Blitz Black + Rustoleum CHEAP-O paint job

Thank you all.

Granted, there ARE errors, but not enough to feel bad. It doesn't even look bad close-up.

This was done outdoors, on a dirt driveway, 50 yards from a dirt road. And as soon as I finished with the Red, every bug for miles decided to come and sit in the paint, so I have some touch up and buffing to do eventually. I also have a few little fish eyes, and a small sag.

But the beauty is that I can easily touch up either color with a dab of readily available over-the-counter paint and a small brush.

In this pic you can see how well the Rustoleum came out. This is the best panel. The Auto Enamel reducer made a huge difference, IMO.

That's the quote right there. Really like this. So nice that it's possible to make these trucks look good without spending cubic dollars on paint.

To be honest I have more respect for DIY than $$$. It is easy to spend money to have a nice truck, IF you have it. But my favorite threads are the ones about how somebody did something for FREE or CHEAP and still made it look really nice or function well.

The one ingredient that I have plenty of to add to most projects is SWEAT.

Re: Blitz Black + Rustoleum CHEAP-O paint job

Great job and results!

To encourage others to 'Get it Done', here are some picts of a Rustoleum paint job on a military trailer. Paint was rolled on straight out of the gallon can using a basic house paint roller and pan with edges done with a budget brush. The dusty look is due to one of the local trees being in full pollen dump mode when the pictures were taken.

I agree, plus it's "Built, not bought"

I'm no painter, yet have painted several I drove. Yes, you can point out the defects, but it is still a great sense of accomplishment

COOL Trailer!

We had some sunshine today so I hauled ass out and washed the truck, so I could get a few good pics before someone scratches it!

This is it all assembled again.

Looks nice.
I sprayed my ‘burbon about 6 years ago with JD blitz. It’s holding up pretty good- mine hasn’t been garaged so it’s getting a little chalky but still the best $64 paint job I can imagine.

Re: Blitz Black + Rustoleum CHEAP-O paint job

I think there are a number of Matte Finish detail sprays that contain UV protection that may help:

Rat Wax
Wizards Wipe Down Matte
Flitz Matte Finish Cleaner
etc

That will turn heads every bit as much as a high $ job would have. I like the matching tool box and milk crate.

Re: Blitz Black + Rustoleum CHEAP-O paint job

Nice work, I have used Blitz Black for years (I used to work for a couple different JD dealer groups). My first pickup was a blue and white '79 Bonanza.

Good results in tough conditions, black ralley wheels and gloss red make a really good contrast. VERY NICE..

Re: Blitz Black + Rustoleum CHEAP-O paint job

Thanks!

Built a console a while back - used a soft bath mat from Wallymart to cover the lid. The armrests were in bad shape, so I just built a couple new ones out of plywood and covered them with the same fabric as the console. Came out ok.
