Remove fender extension? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

My front fenders have a seemingly vestigial extension on the very bottom. They appear to serve no purpose other than to take up 3/4-inch of precious ground clearance. My truck is pretty darn low, I need all the clearance I can get. That's the first place that will hit on a speed bump. Any reason I shouldn't cut off this extension?

The extension I'm referring to is visible at the bottom of this patch panel:

I can't even think of why those would have to be there.

Is this splash guard supposed to mount to that flange? If so, I'd whack that "vestigial" chunk off of there.

That piece goes between the cab/running board, rear fender and box. He is working on the front. He is working on the front fender. The only thing I can think of that might fasten to that tab is a little mudflap sort of thing but I doubt any of us have ever put one on even if we had the piece.

Ha ha, that's why I called it "vestigial" - it's like the human tailbone: a useless extension that once served some unknown purpose but is now long obsolete!

Thanks guys, I'll cut it off, as soon as fire regulations allow the "cutting or grinding of metal."

My ongoing truck projects: 48 Chev 3100 that will run a 292 Six. 71 GMC 2500 that is getting a Cad 500 transplant. 77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.
