small block engine decoding help...
have these two small blocks and finally got around to getting the numbers off the pad on front of pass cyl head....first goes like this
16K431089 VO401CMJ 2nd looks like this 1M1011 7VP any ideas???? --Mike

The numbers on those pads are suffix codes I can't remember the exact details but seems to me they were stamped at the factory with a plant code maybe a date code and the last few numbers of the vin. I may be wrong but it's something to that effect. the casting numbers identifying the engine are on the bellhousing flange at the back of the engine on the drivers side. that number will tell you what the engine is as far as model years and hp ratings etc.

CMJ---1974 350 with T400-- out of a police car-4 bar.carb
CMJ---1980 305 -auto-Camaro (will need to check casting # on back of block on driver side to see which) could not finf other one.

Hey...I looked everywhere trying to find the suffix decoder but I could only find the casting decoder is that info online somewhere jhow66?

1M should be GM of Mexico, so it is a crate engine.
The 7VP should be the engine suffix. I don't know of a good list for the newer stuff, maybe someone else can help out with that part.
