1971 K5: Bumper Questions

First off, thanks sooo much for all the info here! Not sure I'd take on this project without some 'backup'.

I've been working on a 1971 K5, started with mechanical and now I'm working on metal. A few pictures attached.

The PO "custom" welded a truck bumper on, I did not like. I got the truck bumper cut off, but the PO did such a sweet job with his welding... I can't see the original bumper bracket mounts. Can anyone help me with a measurement from the outside edge of the frame horn (I can still see it) to the inside edge of the bumper bracket?

Trying to get the distance right.

Looks like a solid truck.

I wonder if you could bolt the bumper bracket to the bumper, see where it hits the frame a drill the hole to bolt it up?

Am i understanding correctly what you're trying to do?

A pic of your frame and what you're dealing with might help.

Thanks! Super pumped on the progress. I already trust it to drive a few hours down the interstate, head up into the hills, and get back home.

I was hoping for some sort of measurement, I'm not sure how far the bumper should be from the body. That distance would help too, sheet metal to the inside of bumper.

It's at a buddy's place, I'll try to get some pictures.

Are you talking about the rear bumper?

Both of mine are 1970's but I could measure them tonight. You are wanting to install the sport bumper, right?

Getting some measurements would help, much appreciated!

I don't know if it's the sport bumper. It looks like the one in this picture (not my ride).

Re: 1971 K5: Bumper Questions

On a Blazer/Jimmy the frame itself is the mount for the inside bumper bolts. It turns down and is the shape of the bumper. The outside bolts are brackets that go from the frame diagonally out to the outside holes. On a pickup, the rails are straight and all of the brackets bolt on to the frame. So if the ends of your frame rails are chopped off, you will need to scratch mount some inner mounts but you may be able to use the angled outside mounts to help position the sport bumper.

Re: 1971 K5: Bumper Questions

71's are chopped off like a truck, 72 is the only year the frame rail extends to the bumper.

71's take 4 bumper brackets 2 inners and 2 others. 72's only need the 2 outers.

Both of mine measure 2-3/4" from the rear sill under the tailgate to the top edge of the bumper. That picture you posted is the Sport bumper (well, that's what i call 'em...)

Good luck, Rg

True, the frame doesn't extend to the bumper. I thought only the non-angled bracket was used for the Blazer? I have all 4, the angled ones didn't line up with any holes on the frame.

Anyone have a picture of their Blazer's bumper connections?

Thanks for that, it will help with the height. How about a measurement from the frame end to inside the bumper or from the frame end to the end of the straight bracket? I'll get a picture, but the bumper is definitely sitting "off" the body too far.

Actually that's not the height measurement, it is the horizontal measurement from the rear cross sill to the inner top edge of the bumper. I'll try to get a picture tonight.

You may want to check this thread... it has some pretty good pics in it. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...umper+brackets

I think my bumper/frame is different than yours. My frame end doesn't go all the way to the bumper... My rig is a 1971.

Ahhh. Didn't know that. I've had 4 different trucks, 3 Jimmy's and a Blazer. Coincidentally they were all '72. Suprising they made that change but good to know.

Re: 1971 K5: Bumper Questions

Can anyone with a '71 or similar help me out with a measurement or 2?

Just want to know where to set the bumper on my Blazer.

Re: 1971 K5: Bumper Questions

I have a 71 frame but no bumper brackets so I can get you a measurement of where the holes should be to mount the brackets. I'll measure from the end of the frame rail if that will work.

Re: 1971 K5: Bumper Questions

Didn't realize the 2nd picture was that bad looks to be 2 inches and 9 inches from the top corner of the frame. There is a bolt head under the 9 inch mark just hidden behind the spring shackle. The measurements are from a 70 blazer that has the wrong bumper but the correct center bracket.

Thanks! I'll see if those are enough. Sorry about the response lag, holidays are chaos.
