Master Cylinder / brake Question - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I Notice the other day that the brakes on my 68 where not working very well … (truck slowly stopping, pedal to the floor)
So I poked my nose under the hood & noticed when I removed the MC cover/lid that the fluid had drained from the front reservoir to the back reservoir, over filling the back reservoir & spilling out when I removed the cover..
I removed the wheels and drums in front to check for leaks and found none.
Does this passage of fluid from the front to the back mean I have a bad MC ??

Truck Specs:
68 ½ Ton Drum / Drum
Vac boost
All new rear brakes (rebuild kit, drums & flex lines)
New front brakes (rebuild kit, Drums resurfaced, flex lines & wheel cylinders)

NOTE: after the rebuild, I bleed the system 10 different times over a 2 week span, due to the brakes never feeling as firm as they where before I rebuilt them.
They did firm up a bit for a few 100 miles but now the pedal hits the floor after prolonged pedal pressure.
The truck stops but it makes you nervous to drive behind people because ti doesn't stop very quickly any more.

Now I noticed the fluid transferring thing & wonder if I have a bad MC….

Hmm... maybe its time to swap over to Disc…

If it is time which conversion kit is the best bang for the buck ECE or CPP?

It DOES sound like you have a bad MC. Your symptoms are what I had on a 62 impala that had one go bad. changing it out should be no problem.

well I ended up just buying all new front disc brakes,booster,MC & Lines from POL.
Disc Kit

Booster/MC Kit

Line Kit

Anyone see anything I may have overlooked or need?

I bought all new 5 lug 15" wheels as well so I'm goo there.

The disc brakes will make your truck much more enjoyable to drive.

Here is the review on the front Lines.

These are my First set of "pre-bent" lines to install, and from this experience I would do it again in a heart beat.

Some tweaking here and there was necessary, but not much at all, they are a good fit out of the box, (after you unbend the "shipping" bends)

As you can see from the pictures below, I installed these lines not only with my motor in but with Hooker long tube heads on as well. ( I know I'm crazy)

Getting that one piece rear line in-between the headers & the frame rail on the passenger side was twister moment. but doable.

All in all I'm happy I went this route. Take a look at the below pictures and you will see they are a good buy.

Lines right out of the box, "pre bent" for shipping

Label

What you get in the box Left to right
** Booster to passenger side rear brake line cross over
** Booster to Front brake Distribution Block
** Front Driver to Passenger cross over line
** Top bag - 1/4" line plug
** Bottom Bag - Master to Proportional Valve
** Not in picture - Front driver line from Distribution block (6" long)

I like how the front line meets up with the rear line before going down to the frame rail

Pre-bent for the stock hold down clamp

This is where I spent the most time tweaking, (10 min)
The rear line "was" hitting with the shock

Clears the shock now

Lines clear the frame & do not touch the cross-member

Front Cross-member fits great

Driver Side cross-member

Passenger Side cross-member

Passenger Side

Getting this side in was fun,
I bent the old rear line a tad to make it easier,

These are some great pics. Thanks for the tip on the line kit. I have been trying to decide which kit to get and thanks to you this will be the kit I buy.

Thanks for the follow up.

I would recommend that you send a pic of the line hitting the shock to the vendor. They may not be aware of the problem. Not sure if they would do anything about it, but you never know.

Drove the truck down the highway today... :speeding:

. Truck still stops great and I have not had one single issue with the brakes or lines!!!
