Picked up an ‘03 1500HD

Just picked up this 2003 1500HD Silverado. Has 200K on it but is in immaculate condition. I’ve been looking for about 6 months but always getting beat out by the flippers/dealers on the ones that are decently priced. This generation of trucks seem to be Uber popular here, as they sell like hot cakes. Even the ones outrageously overpriced eventually sell. I wanted a crew cab that seats 6, can tow almost anything, and had a large enough bed to haul crap to the dump.

That's a nice looking truck. It looks like it was well-maintained. How's the interior?

Does it actually have the quadrasteer option since it has the quadrasteer bed?

It appears to be a quadsteer, the width of the rear end looks like a wider track than the front,

Re: Picked up an ‘03 1500HD

The interior is even nicer than the exterior, still smells new. No rips in the upholstery. I don’t believe the back seats have ever been sat on. It belonged to an older couple that used it to tow a travel trailer and it was garaged.

Yes, it is quadrasteer It has the turning radius of a Honda Civic I already parked in a few small spots and it really makes it convenient, especially at the grocery store where any spot is hard to find.

I've always wanted to drive a quadrasteer Truck. When I was looking for my truck with an 8.1 it took forever to find the right one too but they are out there. Nice score

The only problem you can have with a quadsteer is don't go and do some major off roading, and back into a rock, like my friend did with his, bent a tie rod,and she wouldn't steer to good,I think they were made more for highway use, towing trailers,

Re: Picked up an ‘03 1500HD

I wasn’t looking for one with quadrasteer in particular, just wanted a clean one owner truck that wasn’t beat to crap. I’ve been successful in doing that with 67/72 trucks but for some reason had a much more difficult time finding one of this generation I read up a lot on the quadrasteer and it seems they are pretty reliable unless you get water in the sending unit. I don’t plan to off-road this truck as it is not 4wd. It has the 6.0 engine and 8 luggers so I went with it as opposed to a 2500. The whole family fits in it and is a useful truck all the way around. I only use the quad steering mode in small parking lots, otherwise I’m used to the longer wheelbase from driving a Yukon XL all the time too. It will come in handy when I go to pull a trailer and back up with one as well.

Re: Picked up an ‘03 1500HD

Great find Scott, congrats. I’ve got two 2001s - have owned the Z71 since new (290k+ miles and still going strong) and a 2500HD 8.1 reg cab with 17k mi, that was a stumble-on find that I just couldn’t pass up, great trucks. I learn something new on here every day - did NOT know the Quadrasteer trucks had a different bed!! (and I don’t know much about Quadrasteer period). I’ve always kinda been interested in the nuanced differences between 2500s and 1500HDs in this era. What trans does yours have, 4L80E? Axle gear ratio? The 1500HDs in this era seem much more robust and HD than, for example, the 6 lug 2500s in the previous 88-99 era.

Re: Picked up an ‘03 1500HD

Hey Mark, it has the 4L80E trans and a 4:10 posi rear, the PO ordered it with a lot of options from what I can tell. I believe it’s the same as a 2500, made for towing with the Dana 60 rear end, but insurance is less because it’s classified as a 1500. It also has hydro boost brakes and stops better than any vehicle I’ve ever owned. The quadrasteer is an electric rack and pinion that’s integrated into the rear differential cover. It’s very similar to a front Dana 60 setup. Because the rear end is so wide the bed has to be wider to cover the tires. It looks just like a dually bed That is a DOT requirement as well as having the cab roof marker lights. I’ve done a lot of reading up on them and due to the high cost of the option ($5000 all by itself ) it didn’t sell real well. Only about 15% of the 2002-2006 rigs got it. It was standard on the Denali from what I understand. It seems GM didn’t market it too well either...the dealers were not very educated on it from the factory. Everyone that has the setup raves about it and wants GM to bring it back. Factory parts for it are no longer available but there are some aftermarket companies starting to reproduce parts due to the demand. Parallel parking is also a breeze and every Suburban driving soccer mom in America would appreciate it

Re: Picked up an ‘03 1500HD

wow, a 5K option! No wonder it didn't sell very well - but today, buying it as a used vehicle is probably a great way to get one that people don't even consider. It sure sounds HD, front to back, that's a lot of nice hardware. I was looking for a 2500HD with a 6.0/4L80E but stumbled across the current 8.1/Allison combo I have today. I like it - it sounds like a gas hog, and it is, but it's really not much different than the 6.0 combos due to gearing - the 8.1Ls generally came with 3.73 gearing, which helps a lot on the highway at least. Congrats again, sounds and looks like a very nice find.

Re: Picked up an ‘03 1500HD

This is hands down my dream truck. I have been looking for a loaded 03-05 quadrasteer 1500HD for over a year, that isnt rusted to hell. Congrats on the find!
