Looking at a GMC 7000- Help identify?

Im going to go look at a 1986 GMC 7000 later in the week. The guy sent me pictures earlier and says its a 454/5 speed manual. Most of these trucks I see are 366/4 speed, did these ever come with the 454 and a 5 speed? If so, is the 5th gear OD?

A 454 was optional in the medium duty trucks '79 to '81, so if it's an '86 I would say it is not the original engine. Should be a 366 or 427, SPID label should say. As for transmission, it's most likely a Clark 285V, which is direct in 5th.. There were many 5 speed manual transmissions available in those trucks, a couple were overdrive (Clark 285VO one of them), so again check the SPID label.

Re: Looking at a GMC 7000- Help identify?

the air cleaners for some reason say 7.4l / 454 on them . but there 366 or 427 tall deck .

waterpump area on block is flat across on std deck reg bbc motors . pic 1

then tall deck motors are taller head surface = more meat above the block . pic 2 .

i dont recall this vintage with o.d. gear . i have a 88 gmc7000 with the 366/5 speed and its just 1:1 in 5th .
