Title issues in north carolina for a truck they labelled as 'parts'

OK, so I did a stupid thing because... I just didn't know any better. I bought a 61 apache 10 from my cousin (never got the title from previous guy 15 years ago). I went to do the indemnity bond thing to get a title- and was dumb enough to write that my cousin bought it intending to use it for parts. The nc dmv then slapped 'parts' on it- and said i could never title it or register it. Sadly, it's a perfectly good, working, driving truck. any advice? above board of course.

Can you explain to DMV it was an error and you were simply writing down verbal history and got it wrong because upon talking to your cousin again he was talking about a different truck? Have have the DMV just correct it?

Ask for an inspector (inspection) and plead your case

^This. Plead your case that it was a mistake on your part in the paperwork, own it. Don’t dilly dally though, correcting the mistake asap will play a part in it being reasonable for them to assume it was a mistake. Then ask for an inspection so they can see the truck wasn’t used for parts. If they see the body panels are all the same color/condition they may be able to do something. Also bring whatever paperwork you have for the bond to show that your were trying to go through the process of getting the truck on the road instead of labeled “for parts”.

It’s either this or a cab swap for one with a clean title.

There is a mechanism to title the truck but never again in NC...it can take six months and involves a registered rebuilder and fees...

Good luck pleading your case to NC DMV....

You could buy a similar titled truck and use the parts from the running truck to make the other truck road worthy.....

Either way, this is a good lesson for anyone looking at buying a truck with a dubious title....

My dealings...if it has a title and it matches the truck details...it is considered a possible deal....
If the PO does not have a title...its a parts truck only....

Re: Title issues in north carolina for a truck they labelled as 'parts'

yep. i had an indemnity bond on it, got a plate, had it inspected as not stolen- then someone in Raleigh said 'parts' (I wrote I think 'my cousin bought it 15 years or so ago to use as parts). That sealed it. I pleaded, called, argued, etc. they would NOT change it. I'm told they want old vehicles off the road- emissions, safety, etc, etc.

for a state that is as heavy into Motorsports as NC you'd think they would be more lenient

Re: Title issues in north carolina for a truck they labelled as 'parts'

"Sell' it to someone in Georgia using a Bill of Sale and have them register it as theirs. Then get someone else in Georgia to "sell it" to you using a Bill of Sale and the new registration. Then apply for a title using an address in a different state. Once you have this title the DMV in NC will (likely) have to honor it. I have heard of others who "cleansed" titles in this manner.

not a bad idea- thanks. The DMV said it can 'never' be titled in NC now- but I can try. I have a brother in Tennessee....

Tennessee has titles that far back. If you don't have a transferable title it would need to be Alabama or Georgia that don't. In Tennessee you might get a clean title from an "Artisans Lien" process if you don't have a title.
