LS Power steering pump, Hydroboost vs non-hydroboost

Does anyone know if the power steering pumps with Hydro boost have higher pressure then the non-hydro boost pumps? The only difference I can find so far is they have an extra re-turn line.

I am working on power steering lines this weekend on the 67.

Thanks

Re: LS Power steering pump, Hydroboost vs non-hydroboost

I read all I could find on the 2 pumps and never got a clear answer....so I added a extra return fitting to my stock non-hydroboost pump....I also have a hydroboost pump on my C30 and see no difference between the 2 other than the extra hose barb

I’ve heard if the donor vehicle had a steering box you are ok, and if it had a rack and pinion you will have low pressure. I don’t know if this is legit or here-say.

I hadn't thought about it but that makes sense since a R&P operates at a lower pressure than a steering box.

Yeah finding a pump that came out of R&P car is a good idea. I never like having a over powered steering system.

Re: LS Power steering pump, Hydroboost vs non-hydroboost

Pressure you can adjust with a spring on the discharge port of the pump. Flow is a function of displacement of the pump. A hydroboost and a rack will take more flow than just the rack.

I'd run the type 2 Saginaw pump that came on your LS motor first to see how it works. Is there any LS motor that came in a truck or car that didn't have a rack and pinion?

Off road cars running the LS Saginaw pump often use a ram steering setup and there's higher flow Saginaw pumps to meet the higher demand of the ram steering.

If you need more flow, you can buy a bigger pump from Howe Steering and several others. LS trucks have a different steering pump shaft size than cars do, so be careful.

They also sell different pullies for the Saginaw TC pump that will change the flow rate.

Re: LS Power steering pump, Hydroboost vs non-hydroboost

Chiming in here to learn as my swap 5.3 has 3 fittings and I was trying to determine if I could just cap one off and use it or needed to get a 2 port pump. I’m assuming my donor had hydroboost.

Yes I am clamping off the upper of the 2 return lines.
