Re: Which flywheel,clutch setup

should be a 168 tooth flywheel. I think 292 flywheels have bigger bolt holes than a 283/235. somebody should chime in TJ?

Re: Which flywheel,clutch setup

'67 - '71 292s had 11'' flywheels, '72s had 12''. 292 L6 was same as SBC.
'67 and later 292s have six 1/2''-20 bolts and 3 dowel pins [.4520-27''] securing flywheel to cam end.

L6 292s from MY '63 - '66 used six 7/16''-20 bolts and one dowel pin, like the 250s and 230s. Santucci recommends upgrading to the 1967 standard.

I would.
When I R & R ed my 292 in '05, I got dowel pins from the Chevy dealer -- they didn't fit. I got Leo Santucci's specified .452~'' pins, they didn't fit right either. My machinist came up with 3 pins that did fit, but I didn't mic them for posterity. My advice is to play that size by ear. The 292 is a torque monster, so don't skip the dowel pins.
Santucci gives an alternative in his book: "Chevy Inline Six Cylinder Power Manual," you could have the machinist tap the dowel pin holes to 1/2''-20 and use 3 more bolts there, but they have to have 12-point heads for clearance. Really a competition grade option.

Re: Which flywheel,clutch setup

Any update to your situation? I'm just now finding out that the new crankshaft in my 292 is tapped for 1/2" bolts, but the flywheel that I had the machinist resurface has 7/16" holes.

If I'm not mistaken, Model Years '63 - '66 had 7/16''. MY '66 and later- had the 1/2''.
Just have the machinist rebore the holes to 1/2''.

L6 292 had 6 bolts and 3 dowel pins. L6 250/230s had 6 bolts and one dowel pin.

Re: Which flywheel,clutch setup

Ok. So it looks like I have the flywheel from a 250. Which is entirely possible because we did have a 250 in the truck when we got it. I think I'd be better off getting the correct flywheel with the the three dowel holes for the 292. Its faster to get a new one than send one out and wait for it to get done. Thanks for your reply '68OrangeSunshine.

Sure. 292's flywheel is the 11'' model, just like an SBC. I heard in '72 MY, they even went to a 12'' flywheel, but I'm not sure that's needed. If you have an 11 clutch pressure plate, you don't need a 12''.
Santucci's book lists the crank end bolt holes as six in 1/2-20 UNF, and the three dowel pin holes to be reamed to .4520 - .4527''.
L25 MY '67 and later did have the half inch bolts. [L25 is the 292 L6's SPID code.]
I'd be more worried that the new replacement flywheel wasn't made in the USA to proper industrial tolerances, than I would worry about real Detroit steel of the right vintage.
