67 3 hole instrument panel wiring??

Hey guys,

I was able to find an old original wiring harness that plugs into the back of the instrument panel thanks to Outback truck parts. So now to the task of wiring it up from the new wiring harness. I've search the forum and haven't found specifically what I'm looking for. I have seen the 2 different wiring diagrams and am not sure which one is suppose to go to my 3 hole panel. Basically i just want lights on the instrument panel. My Speedo works. Blinkers have been converted to something the strapped on to the steering wheel, which I will address later. And my fuel gauge doesn't work either which im trying to work on as well. So long story short is there a simple thread anyone can point me towards specifically to the 3 hole panel and or drop any knowledge on how to wire up.

Thanks for your help.

The pink fuel guage feed is power to the guage. The tan fuel gauge is going to the sender in the tank.

So in theory I could run the wire from the tank and hook directly up to the tan wire that runs to the back of the plug?

Re: 67 3 hole instrument panel wiring??

Ok guys I've got 11.30 DC on point 12. Any reason or thought on why the instrument panel lights won't come on as in just even the lights that light up around the speedometer. I put in new bulbs just to make sure. I do get a red light right above the speedo when I click my high beams on/off. I would assume the plastic circuit board is good if that red light comes on correct?

Re: 67 3 hole instrument panel wiring??

Most likely your bulbs do not have a good ground connection. From the pin connection you referenced the 12+ goes along the copper traces on the circuit board to one side of the bulb holder through the bulb's filament and connects to the other side of the bulb holder where it is connected to circuit board again. That trace of the circuit board is connected to the guage housing by screws through the circuit board and then through pin 6 on the connector to ground. Carefully examine the circuit board for broken copper traces. You can also put a ground wire to the metal guage housing to see if that makes the bulbs work. As you see there are a lot of connections that can fail, some only affect part of the lights and other spots all of them. I don't have a three hole cluster to look at, but the traces are easy to follow. You can mark them with a fine point marker to help keep them straight in your mind. Sometimes it is just a dirty connection at the main plug causing the issue. I have had good luck cleaning the connection points with a pencil eraser. Try testing the dead bulbs in a known good spot to verify all your bulbs/holders are good.

Damn guys yall are good! Got my instrument bezel lit up like a light house. Still haven't figured out the gas gauge yet, but I'm happy with the lights. Thanks for everyone's help.

The guys are correct, The fuel gauge wire is the 12 volts feed wire for the gauge. It initiates at the ignition switch three way junction and runs to the fuse panel for the key on circuits, routes through the cluster feed fuse and back to the cluster plug. It feeds the fuel gauge and the charging light.

The fuel gauge is just terminology for the tan sender wire from the fuel tank to the cluster plug to the other terminal on the fuel gauge. It actually routes to the fuse panel before it continues to the cluster plug. Notice on the end of the panel near center is a terminal marked FUEL. This is where the tan sender wire plugs in and then a wire continues on to the cluster plug.

If you have power on the pink wire at the cluster plug and you unplug the fuel sender wire or remove it from the fuel tank sender, the fuel gauge should read at the full plus to the 3:00 o'clock position.
If there's no power to the gauge it will not read and if it is grounded then it will read empty. The gauge itself has to be grounded to the cluster and the cluster has to be grounded to the cab. Since your instrument lights are working I would assume that the cluster is grounded.

Make sure the cluster feed Pink wire is on terminal 7 and the tan sender is on terminal 4.

Here is a highly enhanced diagram of the three hole wiring diagram. It is the second post down and the scroll is on the bottom of the post.
