Re: meth info

I can't understand why anyone would start taking drugs like that knowing how overly addictive they are and how they can mess up your life, if you make it out alive.

Scary statistics there.

Re: meth info

As some of you may know, I am a principal on the Reservation in NE az. Meth is an epidemic all over the country, but especially in the Native cultures. Children with the bullet proof complex is the fastest growing population of users in the US. It is instantly addictive to 90% of first time users, so even if you experiment, meth now owns you. I have watched some of my HS buddies destoy themselves over meth. The first time is all it took and several years of travelling down the spiral into hell. One friend in particular is alive, but has the scars to prove it. You all know of someone who is using or is about to try (1 out of 4), you just may not know, please take the time to pass this info on to everyone you know. I am preparing to do a training on meth for my community, so I wanted to pass this along to my web community friends, if you know someone who is using, get them help, because they cannot do it alone, and will power is a joke compared to the power of meth.

Re: meth info

I've known some people who used this stuff, and watched one guy lie in a er bed and die from it. Peer pressure is hard on someone with low self esteem and all it takes is one time to get hooked.

It's a huge problem where I live, too. I've worked with people that were bad into meth; ended up throwing everything away. It's a dangerous drug because it's nearly, if not completely, impossible to overcome.

Re: meth info

I knew of one man, an engineering graduate student, got on meth, his brain chemistry is permenantly altered. He has to be on psych drugs the rest of his life. And he will never be an engineer.

We recently had a meth lab bust in a decent neighborhood that took everyone by surprise. My personal thoughts, anyone making or dealing meth should get mandatory life in prison or worse.

Thanks for those links. I have a 13 and a 14 year old daughters and I will use those links to scare the living daylights out of them.

I also have two people who used to be like brothers to me, Neither one of them can quit sucking that glass pipe.

Re: meth info

Our local news paper prints a police blotter section & prints peoples name-age-town they live in & what they were arrested for. I've been seeing alot more 40 & 50 year olds busted for meth lately. What is really bad is all the property crimes that go with it,you cannot leave anything unlocked or laying around anymore.Out here they are stealing guard rails from bridges & copper pipes from business's to sell to recyclers.

Frontline did a very informative show on Meth a few years back.
You might want to order a DVD of the show to help spread the word.

I've seen enough people on Cops and the other reality shows to see the damage meth can do. Anyone that can withstand multiple taser blasts and still fight is seriously messed up for life.

They are starting to flavor meth now, trying to allure even more younger kids/users. Its a bad epidemic in this area to where even secured anydrous is no challenge.

Re: meth info

Yeah being from MT I see it all the time. I think all the campaigning they have done against it has helped but still a boat load of people doing it and still alot more trying it and getting hooked. I know alot of people who used it and its scary stuff. There have been a couple murders related directly to bad meth deals in the last 2-3 years in town plus someone died from meth laced with like battery acid and something else. I know two people right now that used it but have quit and been off of it for a couple years now.

Re: meth info

It is so addictive, that once is usually enough, but if you try it the second time, meth now owns you. It is an endorphine producing drug, like Cocaine, except about 100 times more potent. If you know someone who is hooked, get them help. Users are not bad people, the drug owns them and they will do whatever it takes to get the next high. I would guess that the recovery rate would be near zero for folks trying to quit on their own. The comercials, and billboards and this post can help prevent people from trying, but it doesn't heal those that are already using. We need to make this a priority in all of our communities. We need a way to get people help, even if that means calling the police.

Re: meth info

I'm sorry, I respect you and all 70rs/ss but ... The statement "It is so addictive, that once is usually enough, but if you try it the second time, meth now owns you" is ignorant and not based in reality. This is very far from the truth, and I can name at least a dozen people I've done the stuff with who are not hooked on it right now and haven't touched it in the years since our experimentation.

That's not to say the stuff is not BAD, it is AWFUL, it will make some people into its *****, but the reality is, if those people didn't get addicted to meth, they would get addicted to alcohol, weed, heroin, coke or something else, because they have an addictive personality.

Nobody thinks it will happen to them and something very important to understand is that teenagers (and younger) have not yet developed the neural pathways that allow them to understand "consequence". This has been scientifically proven, and is the reason why young people do such wreckless, stupid sh*t.

A close friend of mine (who I've since disowned) lost half a lung to meth year before last and is still using. I've done the stuff before and more than once (but less than a dozen times), and thankfully I didn't get hooked, but I also didn't like the way it made me feel - and many people I know who are hooked DO like the way it makes you feel. I honestly think it wouldn't be as popular if it wasn't so damned cheap and so easy to make.

I am sure it is a crisis, but ... proper education and upbringing is vital, and if there is an epidemic here, it's NOT meth addiction, it's BAD PARENTING.

2¢ from a guy who spent all of his younger life around people doing drugs, with very little parental guidance in the late teen years, and partaking in substances along with them.

Re: meth info

Im 26 and have a friend of almost 20 years who is getting out of jail in a couple weeks. Hes been in there for 6-months after failing another drug test. I believe this 6-months is the longest he has been clean since he started using meth. This will be the second drug rehab type program he has been in. I think after he gets out he has another 9-months of classes, court dates and random drug tests. If he screws up again I think he will be facing a few years. If he can stay clean and get off his probation they will drop the felony charges. I really hope he can stay clean and 6-months is a good start. Only problem is that the 6-months has been in jail where he could not easily get it. I know many others who got hooked on it, but they are not worth keeping in touch with. Its a nasty drug and its everywhere. There has been many busts in my area, here is a picture of one lab that blew up a few streets away from me. The man was seriously hurt and facing some serious charges. Thankfully there was no children in the house at the time.

Re: meth info

Guys..

I'm really surprised someone from OR. or WA. Hasn't piped in here yet.
Meth is a HUGE epidemic and has had a stranglehold on the NW for 10-15 yrs.
It destroys!! and the effect it has on our state resources is astounding.
the crime rate has increased exponentially, you cant leave anything unlocked(crap you cant leave anything locked) etc.. I really dont know what I'm trying to say other than it hurts America, destroys families and puts a huge strain on our already underfunded system.

Re: meth info

Shifty, you never cease to amaze me, meth isn't addictive? How is a drug that controls the endorphines in your brain not addictive? If you have used casually and not been hooked, shame on you for trying it again and again, and you are one lucky SOB that you aren't hooked. I have seen more than a few people throw their lives away, death is a blessing to the folks that have been on it for 2-3 years.

Re: meth info

Phoenix,

The cooks move into the burbs and rent huge houses and turn them into cooking stations. They bust a lot of meth houses in the valley, now they move them to places like up here where it is nice and quiet, and nobody jacks with them. National Forests are big for cooking. The environmental damage is unbelieveable, millions of dollars in cleanup. This is the single most destructive drug out there, cheap, easy to make and has the allure of making users feel invinciable.

Met is bad. It is addictive. And you, sir, are taking my words out of context

Wow, I actually get to use something I learned in massage school. Meth has nearly the exact same effects as cocaine - it acts on the neural receptors of the brain to release dopamine and adrenaline. This common of many narcotics that fall in the stimulants category. Meth follows the common cycle of many things: using it provides a pleasant effect, and when your body has exhausted its dopamine supply, you feel an inverse or negative effect that makes you want to go up again. It takes another 24 hours before your body can rejuvenate its dopamine supply, which is perfect for meth heads, because the high lasts ~12-18 hours - however, it is much worse for coke addicts, because the high lasts a shorter period, thus coke is technically a more physically addictive substance, contrary to your point above which says "it is SO addictive" that "once is enough" but "try it the second time, meth now OWNS you". Coke actually would OWN a person more easily than meth, and crack would do so exponentially more (never done crack before, but I've done coke dozens of times). Meth is just cheaper, so more people do it and kids can get it easier.

I can't sit here and argue with you on this one, but you're relaying messages with someone who spent at least two years of his life around meth heads in Florida, which is another HUGE manufacturing area for Meth, occasionally doing meth when I was younger and I would say that only 1 out of 5 people of the bunch (this is a high estimate) tops got hooked on meth, whereas 1 out of every 2 got hooked on coke.

I'm not trying to argue with you that meth is not addictive. It clearly is an addictive substance - but so is Robotussin, some nasal sprays, hell, even Rush Limbaugh got severely addicted to pain pills.

I've had several friends die in Central Florida from drugs, especially Heroin (which I have also done w/o needles). Probably my biggest loss was Diana Hunter, died in Lake Mary back in ... '96? Very close friend.

Been there. Done that. Your claims are overly stated - and that's all I'm saying.

Go try it, then come back here and repeat that last statement. That's all I'm saying.

All I am asking is that you stop taking everything you read and the worst of the worst horror stories you hear about, then laying them on everyone here as if the only way it works. I was there. Been there, done that, seen it and many other drugs abused and ... it's only like that maybe 20% of the time.

Of the other 80%, bad parenting in almost every case I saw was the other major contribution to people using/experimenting.

BTW - I am drug free and have been for at least a decade. I only did them for a 5-6 year window of my life, and they got me into an assload of trouble.

Re: meth info

I am editing, after rereading your post, it is addictive, maybe I am overstating the facts (according to you) You have used and are not addicted, lucky you, but do you really want to go on record as saying it's bad, but not THAT bad, try it to find out for yourself? If I am playing into the hysteria, shouldn't we all? Is there a such thing as a casual meth user, or a not SO dangerous addictive drug? Drugs, are dangerous, addictive, and will all eventually lead to death, jail, etc, unless the addiction is broken, do you agree?
