help! My truck won't lock. Go figure - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Ok, I've never seen this happen and it's really got me puzzled. The guy I got my truck from didn't have a door lock key so I never tried to lock it. I call a locksmith, have a a key made and the lock re-coded just in case he did have a key and want's to steal it back. So, door locks, unlocks, all keys work. Well, passenger side lock is different, but I digress. So I lock my truck and go inside for an hour, my dad gets home and I look out the back door and he's standing there with my passenger door open. I'm like *jaw drop* "How'd you open that? It's lock!" Well, apparently, when you press the button on the outside it unlocks the freakin door just like if you open it from the inside when it's locked. Can you change something so it does that? If someone didn't have a key it makes sense to do, but sure doesn't help me keep my truck locked.

This may be something you know already but just in case.If you push the lock knob down on the passenger side then close the door,it unlocks itself.You either have to push the lock with the door closed from the inside,or use the key to lock it.

didn't know that, thanks. I guess I can see if that works on the drivers side and then I'd know if they rigged it like that?

mine dose that on the driver side as well.

ya both doors work the same.Can't lock your keys in without some serious effort that way

Ok, now here's some weird stuff. What you just explained the passenger side door does, my driver side door does. And my passenger side won't lock with the door closed. You know how how when lock a door from the inside, you hear it? Well, the button doesn't go down all the way and I don't here it "click". But with the door open I hear the linkage move into the locked position but that doesn't do me any good because I close it and you can just push the button and it unlocks. I guess if I get whatever's keeping the lock from engaging it will work out fine. Any ideas why it won't engage?

Good thing I have a five day wekend then, hehe. But I'm learning about this truck little by little. Guess these doors are just a newbie thing. Lot's of stuff different than my dads 82

I wish I could help you more but I've never had that prob.I'd pull the door panel off and see if you can see or feel anything out of place in there to start with.Let us know what it was!

Do you have new weatherstripping...or had the door re-hung?
Try pusing the door as you try to lock it, and if that don't work, try pulling on the handle as you lock it.

68C15 has the shot I was thinking of, seems like if you don't get the paw of the lock between the two arms it causes problems.

Nice photo, especially considering where its located.
