Question ever seen a crew cab railroad 68?

I have, here's a pic. A guy I work with found this truck, it's a 68 crew cab made for the railroad, it looks like a 2 cabs welded together but we cannot find any welds? He has another cab just like it as a spare he bought from the same guy. I will try to get VIN# so you experts can clarify wether it's real or not..I have seen many trucks that have been made into extended cabs but you can always find the welds on this one there are none!

It is a 68 w/72 front clip air cab w/tilt sitting on 78 4X4 running gears.

Is that truck out of Tahlequah? I think I have seen that one before around there. Looks like a nice truck.

Sure enough is larry! I live about 20 miles west of there and I work with that guy. He says he might sell it if the price is right?

Are you sitting down? It seems a little steep but he says he would take 10 grand for it! It needs paint but the interior is pretty sharp from what I remember.

Wow! I guess it is not a fake! I am trying to buy his extra cab from him, dont think the short bed was factory though the glovebox tag is gone and it doesnt seem like they would equip a railroad truck with a shortbed.

There is no "real" or "fake" when it comes to crew cabs. They are all aftermarket conversions.

Well whenever I say fake I mean a truck that was constructed after the fact, err... like my shortbed that used to be a longbed ya dig? I dont see how this truck could be an aftermarket conversion? If it is they have a hell of a technique....Like I said before, we took carpet out and checked everywhere to try and fond some welds, IMHO this cab came from chevy like this.

Yep, every last one of those crewcabs is an aftermarket job...

I'm still waiting to see my neighbor's one that he's having done at a shop; he described it exactly the way I would do it, using two cabs, a Suburban, and a REALLY good bodyman who can fab the fourth door to mimic the 'burb's third door. He even mentioned the roofline, which is generally my biggest peeve after the mass amounts of steel between the windows...that roof is hard to modify and have look right. (I've only talked to him once about it, given that while he does live a few doors down from my dad, I'm now about 100mi south. Supposedly it'll be done this winter...)

The ochre/ white GMC used to be mine...( it is going to be again soon!!).....anyhow, as far as them being real or fake.....They were sold through the dealer as a dealer conversion. Fake? I guess all of the stuff GM farms out is "fake" then....I guess all NAPCO 4wd 's are "fake"....Not trying to start a war on the board, just stating facts. Sometimes people get hung up on what they think is "factory" and they forget some of the most desirable automobiles ever made were not built "in house"......Just a few that come to mind....Shelby's. Yenko's, Daytona's (69) and Superbird's(70) Hurst/ Olds...etc......so before you get all hung up, remember that there are lots of "non" factory cars out there...and any of you want to get rid of any of these "non" factory cars...let me know.......

Also, if you look at the way the floor pan is joined, that is where you will see the most obvious seam....as for the rest of it, You can only tell on the frame...but since your buddy's is on 78 frame you wouldn't see it.
The wierd triangular panel that is between the windows is a one piece stamped unit. It is not "pieced" together....The strangest thing that I found is that the filler piece between the doors on the lower part of the body is actually fiberglass....

BTW the majority of these "conversions" were done by a company called THE PROCTOR BODY COMPANY out of Michigan....again, under a license from GM.....
also just FYI, mine was/ is a factory 402 truck with all the trim and dealer add on AC...I have personally seen 4 of these trucks, and this is the only GMC and the only big block ( that I have SEEN)

AGAIN..since this board has become so volatile, I AM NOT TRYING TO START A WAR...:p
I just have a very special place in my heart for these trucks...

There were 2 types made. 4 door and a 2 door.

Oh no really, my bad! I am the one who insisted that it was a factory job lol! You've got a point as far as Yenko's and Shelby's are another example... As far as i'm concerned, if it came as a dealer conversion it's not a "fake" and I use that word lightly cause i'm a guilty "faker" hehe.... At first I thought these trucks were ugly as hell, but the rarity makes id very desireable to me just like rare options and such.

The Alton Co. and Scott Bilt were two other companies licesensed thru Chevrolet to build these trucks, the Scott Bilt Co. was actually a Chevrolet dealership in Oklahoma City, Ok. and they also made a 3 door six man cab, these trucks could come with a stock or altered wheelbase. I believe the truck that fine69 just bought is one of these.

4 DOOR SUB?

I know I've seen a red/orange GMC Four door Suburban, '69 to '72, cruising around Tucson. I heard GM of Mexico made some conversions for oil companies. I don't know if the 4th door works, I've only seen it in traffic.

Really? Whereabouts? Not anywhere near UofA, is it?

I'll have to keep an eye out for it...though I have yet to drive my own pickup anywhere except for from the Tyndall street parking garage to the Tyndall and Speedway Circle K to I10 to Phoenix and back...

(Lather, rinse, repeat weekly; I have yet to stay a weekend in the dorm. )

Hey Crews... where is the filler panel exactly. I don't recall ever noticing any fiberglass anywhere on my crew cab truck. The cab in my truck was split in two right in the middle of the door frame from one side to the other. If you take out the headliner all of the support frames for the roof show the non-factory type welds. The conversion companies did alright in my opinion.

On mine, the piece between the doors ( from the handle area down..) is fiberglass...at least it has a glass layer on it. I think they might have 'glassed it to build up the area to be flush with the doors.

You know I am jealous of yours....didn't your Dad buy it new?

crew 70- I would be interested in seeing a copy of some of the info you have in the silver book.
