Where is gauge cluster ground?

I removed my gauge cluster to update my wiring harness with Painless wiring harness. In some searches I have been reading that there should be a ground wire from the gauge cluster to the firewall. When I originally removed my gauges I don't recall seeing such a ground wire. Where should it be located on the gauge cluster? I see that pin-7 is a ground. Is that it?

My dash circuit connector came prewired for use with a gauge cluster (which is what I have). Is it possible that the ground was incorporated into my Painless wiring? There was a black wire with round crimp connector for grounding, but it didn't come off of pin-7. I just want to be sure it is grounded properly.

Re: Where is gauge cluster ground?

my cluster didn't have a physical ground strap, only a ground through the wire connector..

Re: Where is gauge cluster ground?

there should be a clip on wire, clips on both ends, one on the inst panel, the other clips to the dash (not firewall). I have only seen one in person.
I would make a ground wire that bolts to the panel, and then with an eyelet goes under the panel and mounts with a panel mounting screw.
I've done that with all my trucks and have never had an issue.

Where would the ground wire bolt to the panel? Do you mean bolt it to the back of the instrument panel? Then the opposite end has an eyelet that goes between the instrument panel and dash?

Re: Where is gauge cluster ground?

I like to bolt it to the back of the instermant panel down where the oil pressure guage backing plate bolts to the panel.
Then the other end I just solip under a screw to where it gets pinched between the inst panel and dash.

Re: Where is gauge cluster ground?

I went back and looked and the Painless instrument connector had a short black wire coming out of it with a crimp on ring connector. I assumed this to be an instrument panel ground. I grounded this wire to brake pedal mount, which is in turn connected to the dash and firewall. Hopefully this is right.

I was just trying to answer my own question on grounding the instrument cluster. Good information and those are two very nice trucks in your pics.
