72 to 68 GMC hood change.

I just read a thread about it and saw several pics with GMC's that were done. Does anyone know if it is as simple as just changing out the hood latch and trim? I love the look of the old hoods, I wish they would have left them the the 67-68's.

Re: 72 to 68 GMC hood change.

That was the first mod I did to my 72 sierra when I first got it. Like u
mentioned, u will need a 67-68 chevy or gmc hood, a 67-68 hood latch, and
in order to reuse your stock 69-72 gmc grill, u will have to remove the
upper trim of grill that is attached with rivets, then u will have to find a body
piece that covers tha gap from the hood and the grill,it attaches to the fenders, u will have to find that piece in a wrecking yard or ebay (hard to get) cause those only came with original 67-68 gmc trucks and are not
remanufactured.

For 69-72 chevys its either replacing the whole clip, (fenders, hood, grill,
radiator support,etc off a 67-68, or cutting and making a 67-68 hood
fit. Not an easy task, (been temped) a member did it, so its not impissible
(he is good though) . Heres a pic showing what Im talking about. Nice huh?

Hey! I dont even know what that piece is called, but take a closer look at
the picture u posted earlier of the gmc, the 67-68 gmc grills were a 1 piece
unit, 69-72s have a thick molding on the top attached on the grill itself, in
order to make your existing 72 grill fit with the 67-68 hood, u will need to
remove this molding, after u remove it, the 67-68 hood will shut correctly
but, there will be a small gap betwen the actual grill and hood, now, this
is where that filling piece comes along. Like I said before, this pieces
came available only with the 67-68 original gmc's, I will try to take a picture
of mine to show u, just be patient brotha.

Re: 72 to 68 GMC hood change.

I'm not familiar with the 69-72 GMC front grills but here's a pic of the front of my 68 GMC. I think it shows the part that paisaloco67 is referring to.

I know little about GMC's, but looking at the pic... you can MAKE that piece by cutting up a 67/68 Chevy grill... (did I just say that! )

Pic of the top of my Chevy Grill...

Also, for anyone brave enough to try, 67/68 hood modification for the 69-72 Chevy's:

Bringing back an old thread here....

I have long pondered doing this mod/hood swap to my '71 GMC and I have all the parts needed around here somewhere. I had originally imagined I would use a 68-70 GMC grille with the 67-68 hood, basically making it look like a '68 up front. But, the orange and white truck in the OP has a 71-72 GMC grille with the early hood. It sure looks different, and I kinda like it.

Anyone else have pics of 71-72 GMC's with the 67-68 hood?
