Re: 1970 C10 LWB "Blu"

Not much progress on the build lately- mostly waiting for parts to come in. A few delays as my engine gets bumped at the shop for professional race team customers.

Block is nearly finished and ready to go. It got the works- it was hot tanked a few times to clean out the dexcool mess. Magnafluxed, sonic tested, bored and finish honed to piston size, align bored mains, cam journals align honed. Still need the front machined to fit the cam chain tensioner since they didn't come on truck engines (at least not on this LQ4). We're using all ARP fasteners.

Re: 1970 C10 LWB "Blu"

Rotating assembly is forged Mahle pistons, forged callies crank and compstar rods. The short block is being set up to hold 1,000 hp all day long. Overkill for sure but will last forever pushing the planned 600 at the flywheel.

Intake is going to be a FAST 102 LSXRT truck intake (got a great deal on this shop mule) with most likely a Nick Williams throttle body.

The final balancing of the rotating assembly should be done by the end of next week. Then we're cc'ing the pistons so we can tell Advanced Induction what to finish mill the heads to. Then we'll check our valve clearance and get a cam grind figured out with comp cams. Should be around .640ish for lift.

None of this is happening fast but it should be worth the wait when its done.

Re: 1970 C10 LWB "Blu"

I spent a few hours at the engine shop yesterday.

The crank got temporarily installed to cc the pistons. We were able to let the cylinder head shop know how much we wanted milled off to finish the heads to get our target static CR.

The reluctor wheel got installed (still needs to be welded on).

And I spent some time doing my rocker arm trunion upgrade (eliminates the factory needle bearings).

Before I left I also hung out a while and watched Rick do a balance on a rotating assembly. I knew the theory of it but haven't watched it being done before.

Re: 1970 C10 LWB "Blu"

My crank/rotating assembly got done this afternoon. My guy got it dialed in within 2 grams (1%, which is standard for most machine shops, would have been 17 grams). I'm going to run an ATI dampener as well so this thing ought to be smooooth.....

Thanks Larry. I wish I had your level of progress to report. I'm probably going to be on the sidelines this year.

Well...... the engine did get dropped off at the shop in late December. You might be done your new build before I see mine moving under its own power again!

Other than that sexy new damper (another gratuitous pic below) showing up yesterday, not much to report. I am hoping I can pick up my cylinder heads this week. Advanced Induction lost a board on one of their machines and since they use all F1 spec stuff the replacement had to come from the other side of the Atlantic. That's got them behind a couple weeks.

When I have the heads we are going to get them on my short block and see what my true valve clearance is going to be (put a dial indicator on the top of the valve and see where it makes contact with a piston at tdc). Then we give comp cams a call and see what they come up with for a cam. Looking for 1.5 hp/ci which should be around 600 at the crank. As long as the torque is strong too- should be with the displacement.

Then it's final assembly and back to the shop for initial start, break-in and tune on one of the shop dynos. I'll be happy if it's fired within the next two months.

Re: 1970 C10 LWB "Blu"

Heads are finally done. I had Advanced Induction in Concord, NC give them the works with their 232cc Full CNC Port package with oversize 2.055" intake valves. BTR valvesprings and ti retainers finish it off.

What's your head CC and your gasket thickness and compression ratio going to be?

62cc. Don't know which head gaskets we are using (may find out today) but static compression will be 11.2-11.5:1 so I can run pump gas. I don't want to have to worry about always finding "good gas" when I travel somewhere. That was always a hassle when I was traveling on my high compression hot-rod HD.

Re: 1970 C10 LWB "Blu"

Got the heads to the engine shop this morning. One of the guys immediately grabbed them and we put them on the flow bench to test them. So now we've got another component of our cam figured out (max mechanical valve lift) based on the flowbench (airflow) results - just need to confirm it mechanically with the heads on the block. We are eyeing the cam used in a 24 hrs of Sebring roadrace engine build that has the characteristics we want.

Also split up the short-list between the shop and I for who is supplying what to finish it. I need to get a bunch more stuff but the start of final assembly is at least in view...... way, way off in the horizon anyway.
