14 bolt help

I have a 14 bolt in my 88 crewcab 1 ton with factory 3.73 gears. just put 35 inch tires on it and some thing has to change. I have another rear with 4.10 in it, but it is out of a 3/4 ton. should I change the whole housing and weld on new perches or change the ring and pinion?

Re: 14 bolt help

373 to 410 may not be enough of a change to make it worth the effort?
What transmission?

Re: 14 bolt help

This might help. I have posted this before in "Engine & Drive Train" Pick the RPM that you want to run on the highway and work back through the chart that also matches your tire size.

This chart is based on engine rpm at 65 mph with the transmission in a
1:1 gear ratio (Third with a three-speed manual, Fourth with a four-speed
manual, or Third with an Automatic). Remember, the actual rpm indicated in
the chart will be slightly higher (between 100 and 300 rpm) on vehicles
equipped with an automatic transmission. This is due to the slip present in
an auto transmission's torque converter.Multiply the RPM's shown by .7 if you want to use a 700r4. If
you have a 700r4 with a lock-up converter the RPM's shown is actual since
there is no converter slippage. Add a hundred or so RPM's to what is shown
if you keep the TH350 for converter slippage.

The chart
The chart is divided into three categories. The rpm highlighted in black are
optimum for the tire size and ratio combination. These will most closely
give you the best overall drivability. If you're looking for a ratio that
will give better fuel economy for highway driving at the expense of some
acceleration and overall performance, choose a ratio in the yellow shaded
area. If you're looking for a ratio that will improve acceleration and
towing power at the expense of some fuel economy, choose a ratio in the blue
shaded area.

Re: 14 bolt help

If you have a overdrive tranny and 4.56:1 gears puts you at 1991 RPM at 65 MPH.

Re: 14 bolt help

What motor do you have? I've run 40s with 3.73s with a stock 454 and had no power issues. But I'd think it would be easier to weld perches over a gear swap. But I've never done a gear swap, so can't comment on the difficulty...

Re: 14 bolt help

I assumed it was a 454. I didn't even know they put a 350 on a 1 ton crew cab.
Anyway, I would just swap gears.

Re: 14 bolt help

If those are the only options, re-weld perches. Much less precision involved if you aren't familiar with a ring and pinion swap and re-establishing pinion depth.
