Re: Ratchet's Blazer - 1970 2wd with Original paint

Thanks Guys!

The exhaust whipped my butt today, and I still have a few things to finish up tomorrow before it's back on the road. It looks like I'm going to miss the Natchitoches show tomorrow, but I should still make a full week of Cruisin' the Coast starting Sunday.

Re: Ratchet's Blazer - 1970 2wd with Original paint

I finished wrenching on the Blazer at 11:30 AM, took it for a 1/2 mile test drive, then loaded it up for Cruisin' the Coast and left at 12:15, drove it 200+ miles to get here and the damn thing is running like a top! There is obviously more potential that will be unlocked with more tuning, but damn I impressed myself!

Re: Ratchet's Blazer - 1970 2wd with Original paint

Apparently the transmission cooler on my radiator is leaking and I had some milky looking trans fluid. It stopped pulling Monday night. We flushed out as much milky fluid out as possible and it pulls again, but shudders pretty bad. I have a buddy showing up today with a trailer so that we can get it home on sunday. I'll see if I can't flush it out better at the house, and maybe add some Lucas trans fix stuff to nurse it along until I can rebuild or replace it.

I feel the same way. I am thinking about putting the SM-465 back in, if I can't save this 700R4, and add a GV overdrive later.

Re: Ratchet's Blazer - 1970 2wd with Original paint

I forgot to add pictures of the finished engine... The air cleaner is going to get taken off, blasted, and powdercoated so that it looks better, I had 15 minutes to wire-wheel it and paint it before I hit the road. I also need to clean and paint the alternator and clean up the wiring. I was in way too big of a rush to get it out the door.

I trailered it home from Cruisin' the Coast yesterday and promptly took a nap, I was worn out. Tonight on my way home from the office, I will get some more transmission fluid and try to flush out more of the milky fluid. If it still isn't working just right, I might add a little posi friction modifier, I've been told it might help. If it doesn't work, I'm on the fence about what I should do... T56?, NV4500?, SM-465 with GV?, or rebuild/replace the 700-R4. We'll see what kind of dumb ideas I can come up with, I'm sure whatever I decide on, it will cost more than I expect.

Looks good Steven!

I'd go to a Tremic 5 or 6 speed or stay with the 700.

Re: Ratchet's Blazer - 1970 2wd with Original paint

Wow, it's been a few months since I touched this thread, but y'all haven't missed anything. I was too mad at the Blazer to touch it for a while, then some family issues came up, and of course, the holidays.

I did decide to rebuild the 700-R4, and it has been pulled out and sent off. I got word that it was finished and brought to a buddy's house for him to spray it the same orange as the engine. Might as well while it is out, right?

While pulling the trans, I noticed that the script valve covers got tweaked a bit from over-tightening and are leaking down the back of the engine. I'm thinking that I will get some plain cast aluminum valve covers, paint them orange, and put some of Iron Canine's decals to retain a stock-ish look while stopping the leaks.

Unfortunately, this unexpected expense has delayed the wheels and air bags a bit more. I want to make sure I'm not finishing stuff at the last minute right before Goodguys in March at the Texas Motor Speedway (like I did for CTC), so I definately won't start that snow ball rolling until at least the end of March, maybe later.

Too bad the script ones are leaking. Are they too tweaked to be made to work Steven?

That's a good idea for the replacement covers. I like that look.

Re: Ratchet's Blazer - 1970 2wd with Original paint

Doug,

I could probably work them back into shape, but they would need to be refinished afterwards. Another problem with them is the fact that they don't have any baffles since they were modified to accept the breather and PCV. There is oil getting out there also.

I've never had good luck with stamped steel valve covers since I always tend to over-tighten them. It will put me ahead if I just get some valve covers with a stiff rail now. PML actually makes some cast valve covers that look like the original steel script covers, but they are $pendy.

Well, my shiny valve covers showed up last week, so of course, I had to take them to work and blast them to get rid of the shine!

Re: Ratchet's Blazer - 1970 2wd with Original paint

We got the transmission and valve covers painted last night, loaded them up this morning (after curing) and got them back to the shop this afternoon. Next Saturday, I should be getting some help to install the trans, and hopefully all will be good from now on with the Blazer!

Are those valve covers from Jegs?
I just got a set of big block valve covers like yours.
