Re: Electric Vehicles?....who's in? who's out?

I am opposed to all subsidy unless in time of declared (by congress) war. That includes oil companies.

Lobbying ("buying votes") is made easier by the fact America really does have a "ruling class." These incumbents stay in office so long some must literally die before they leave. That's not a "republic" that's a "monarchy." There was a report written anonymously, I think it was 2013, by a congressman who stated that "many in Congress have dementia and it is their staffers that do all the work." (Something to that effect).

Term limits would help I think. The main problem is most of the populace simply doesn't care...the level of history education, awareness, long-term interest in the success of the country, and preservation of individual liberty just isn't there. Further, it's rare an election even garners 1/2 of the voting public.

Eventually such a nation must fail, all good things come to an end.

I doubt an electric car would do well where I am....WV hills are a thing, a big thing if you get onto the smaller roads and off the interstate.

No thanks. Nothing appealing at all about them.

This sums up my thoughts entirely.

If I need a tow behind generator to go any distance I'm out.

Re: Electric Vehicles?....who's in? who's out?

when they are better you won't have to be told to buy one. for me fully electric isn't an option at this time. range and recharging will not work for what I do at least not for a main vehicle. a hybrid pick up that can still tow and haul would be the only way I would consider it. if I can't gas it up and keep going i'm not buying it, right now recharging time are still the killer. once they get recharging down to 30 minutes or less for a 300-400 mile range without killing the battery i'll be in

Re: Electric Vehicles?....who's in? who's out?

I was thinking of buying a Volt ,,as my son has one in Southern California and he saves a lot of money from Gas Prices and I could here too.. ,,,but ,,,The automaker will no longer make the Volt semi-electric car and the Cruze compact sedan for sale in North America beginning in March, Chevy spokesman Kevin Kelly confirmed......not interested no more as WE Tax payers bailed them out ..

Re: Electric Vehicles?....who's in? who's out?

Electric vehicles simply defer their pollution somewhere else: coal-fired plants, hydroelectric dams or nuclear power plants - all environmental disasters which electric vehicles will increase. Heck, even wind turbines are, as John Stossel says, "giant bird-killing Cuisinarts." The California power grid can barely maintain the load that is on it now; imagine 30 million EVs added to that. Not to mention the elephant in the room that is battery disposal...

Multiply the pic below by 270 million electric cars and that's your future vistas with EV's:

Re: Electric Vehicles?....who's in? who's out?

These are early electric cars. Technnology will improve. To be able to generate and maintain their own charge as driven would be the goal. To not rely so much on being plugged in, if at all, or huge battery storage. The hybrid thing is a great idea. Look at trains. No, they aren't totally electric, but they generate their own power through use of extremely minimal fossil fuel by comparison to any other form of ground transportation for freight.

Smile Re: Electric Vehicles?....who's in? who's out?

Interesting feedback so far....some in, some out, some waiting for improvement.
I would definitely be in the last camp there....until these things can cut it in Canada they will be a novelty to me, not much more.
I appreciate the tech in them tho'....lots of fun stuff going on in there.

I fully agree tho', that the elephant in the room with these EV's is definitely the battery element.
What is the impact on the environment developing these new batteries and what is the impact on the environment recycling or disposing of them.

The near silence and lack of asserted information 'up front' around this element of EV's.....is very, very suspicious to me. I like the full circle of info and impact coming and going.

I'm never one to fall for the lead salesman/marketing stuff that the media trots out in 8 minute infomercials....

All good

Re: Electric Vehicles?....who's in? who's out?

I remember GM's early run at electric vehicles. They ended up buying back and then destroying the units due to the toxic fumes they would generate if they caught fire.

Not that I ever plan on owning one, but I like the idea that they are displacing some of the fuel users.

It means the EV's will drive down the price of gasoline.

And where I live in the Bronx, I don't think I can find a place to plug in an EV without someone stealing the extension cord, or cutting it out of vandalism.

Re: Electric Vehicles?....who's in? who's out?

Electric vehicles aren't so young. The earliest one was built in 1828 according to Wiki. It's a really slow process of developing them I'd say.
Have a read. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Histor...ectric_vehicle

Re: Electric Vehicles?....who's in? who's out?

I think one would be an ideal work car for people like my wife. She travels 13 miles to work and most of them are highway not much stop and go. I don't think I will rush out and buy one as he present work car gets 45 mpg. She has a Chevy Spark which fits her but leaves a lot to be desired for large people like me.

Re: Electric Vehicles?....who's in? who's out?

I meant electric vehicles being to the point of used as serious daily vehicles. That's new and technology is is 'just enough'. It can improve a lot.

Re: Electric Vehicles?....who's in? who's out?

While electric cars are the wave of the future and will continue to gain acceptance, I am a diehard, rumbling v8 kinda guy. I would never willingly own a 4 or 6 banger, even though they crank out multiples of horsepower compared to old v8... They still sound like a friggen sewing machine to my ears.

Re: Electric Vehicles?....who's in? who's out?

I drove an electric car for years. (Company car) Never had a problem. Would I buy a Tesla? Hell yeah, those things are torque monsters. But too much $$$ for me.

When the company gave me the new car, I was like WTF? I'm not driving this stupid thing.
But it actually wasn't that bad. Backing up is a problem because people don't realize it's running. I had a woman pushing a baby walk right behind me once.

I didn't want it. But I never thought I'd want a computer, or the internet either. Until I found out there were naked chick's on the internet. So count me in.

Times change.

Re: Electric Vehicles?....who's in? who's out?

Aston Martin has a program where they retrofit 1960s & 70s stuff with electric power. I would be in if I could afford a Tesla S or something like that, but they would have to pipe in "exhaust noise" I gotta hear that V8 big block sound!

Tim, if the sample video is indicative of the product then no it would not work.
