1964 rear drum backing plates interchangeability

Long story short, I need the backing plates and all non reproduced parts for a 1964 12 bolt. Are there newer years that interchange with the 1964 that might have better parts availability? I read that maybe 10 bolts up to 1987 would work as long as they had 2" drums. If that's the case will all the other brake parts connect such as e-brake cables from the 1964 to the newer backing plates and internal components? I'm assuming if I were to use the backing plates and non reproduced parts from a newer 10 bolt I would still be able to use the 1964 internal brake components and 6 lug drums as long as everything utilized 2" drums/shoes?

All truck 12 bolts from '64-'82 and truck 10 bolts from '79-'87 will have backing plates and internal parts that will work on your '64 housing. You can stay with the 2" wide shoes and drums or upgrade to the 2-3/4" wide shoes and drums. For the 2-3/4" wide shoes you must have the correct backing plates.

Thanks Captainfab. Are the backing plates themselves (between the years and/or 12 and 10 bolt axles) the same but the hardware, drums, etc different based on which width you go to?

The backing plates and drums are different for the 2" wide shoes than those for the 2-3/4" wide shoes. Either will bolt to a '64-'87 10 or 12 bolt truck differential.

Thanks. Is there a way to visually tell the difference in backing plates, or a photo comparison you may have in your files?

the backing plate for the 2 3/4" should have a deeper recess where it goes back over the axle flange I would imagine

The 2" on a 66 differential. I hope the picture attaches.

I found some time to take pics today. The first two are of a backing plate for the 2.750" wide shoes. Notice the deeper recess where it is bolted to the axle tube flange.
