Finish on outer axle shafts, ideas for a finish?

Somehow outer axle shafts hold up real well. I wonder how they finished the metal?

This truck doesn't have much in the way of rust. But there's surface rust on the outer axles, in places. Anyway, unless for some reason I shouldn't, I'm thinking to just rattle can the ends with Rustoleum primer and finish coat.

Just came across this webpage. Real nice write-up. 72 Skylark. http://www.buickperformanceclub.com/...eDetailing.htm

I believe it's a black phosphate finish (or oxide?) I think painting will hold up better in the long run.

I could be wrong, but I don't think they're black at all. Just metal color. Perhaps the finish came off. I'm referring to the "flange" portion of the shaft, which as the studs. At any rate, I picked up some materials today, and will hit them tomorrow, primer and paint.

I should add, I'd say the shaft portion inside the tube is a black phosphate. I'm not touching them less a good cleaning, they look great. I wouldn't think that portion is rust prone, due to axle oil.

Must have spent 3-4 hours cleaning them up today. I haven't painted much out of a can or gun, but they should turn out nice....HA!....find out tomorrow.

I was talking about the flange also, I dunno, maybe it was left "raw" from the factory. On exposed parts like the flange on full-floater axle shafts the coating will deteriorate & the flange will rust over time.

I agree, I'd paint the flange but not the shaft.

I think they came out nice. I only painted as far as the "crown" on back of the plate
