What to do about this rust?

Hi All,

I am starting to look at some of the rust on my cab, it's not to bad in my mind but then I am pretty new to this...

used a wire brush on my drill to clean it up a bit but how would one deal with this? It's not rotted through but it's rough to the touch

What part of the US are you in?

What is your goal with the truck?

Northeast OK, near Tulsa. The plan with the truck is to do a frame off "restoration". I want to keep a semi old school look, all the emblems\trim\chrome but lower it a little and put some nice wheels\tires on it. For the inside, I want it to look original ish...

Re: What to do about this rust?

Sandblast it, epoxy prime, skim coat it, sand it down smooth, and then prime/seal/paint like normal.

Wire brushing sort of polishes the rust and makes it look like its gone. Sand it and you'll most likely find its still there.

Sandblasting sheet metal can cause warping, I have been told "crushed glass" is the way to go.

Re: What to do about this rust?

Get some epoxy primer on those bare spots or they too will start to rust.

Bare metal needs epoxy primer. Not self etching primer or DTM (Direct to Metal) type products...only epoxy. Doesn't matter which one, they are all the same for corrosion prevention.
