Obviously I am no pro. I screwed up my tailgate. Next go round I will paint the band or entire face white then use the decals with tape as a masking tool. I will apply the decals with the masking tape to the recessed letters and paint the green. Remove the masking/decals and clear the gate.

I am no pro but I can tell you that in my opinion prepping the tailgate is a lot of work and not something you want to have a painting problem with.

You dont need to be a pro, honestly. If you paint the whole thing a solid color with clear coat and it comes out good then you are most of the way there. Now that you have a nice, smooth surface you sand it with fine grit sand paper like you would if you were going to sand and buff it. You can also use a grey scotchbrite with stuff called Blend-prep. Its this toothpaste tube of stuff that makes getting all of the edges and nooks sanded without worrying about burning through the paint. Then you spray the white and sane it again with a small block, then clear once more. Saves a TON of taping and loos great. If you can paint you can do it.

Re: Painting "CHEVROLET" tailgate lettering

did mine a few days ago...
painted the letters first then placed the vinyl letters as "masking". i did put a strip of pin-stripe tape under the vinyl letter prior to masking. it made it a lot easier to remove. i put the pin-stripe tape on the bottom of the vinyl just incase i ran some blue paint, didn't want it to bleed where the pin-stripe tape was.

Well done! Great documentation! Should be pinned in the "How to" section.

More of this. I did mine nearly the same way, the difference being no clear coat before, between, or after. Decent quality white spray can enamel applied sparingly, directly on blue base color.
- IMPORTANT- Notice the masking technique. Quickly masked with tape edges overhanging the letters giving a "soft" edge not unlike like the lame factory stencils. I could've almost left it alone at this point for a true factory slop look.
Next, I "blocked" the fuzzy edges off with a rubber sanding block wrapped with T-shirt cloth and rubbing compound, NOT sandpaper. Far more control and less risk of burning through this base color way.
I did end up burning through on some spots though, but this was intentional, as I was mimicking natural wear and adding fake patina to some degree. The rest of the truck's paint is heavily worn and a pristine tailgate would just look wrong. I easily could have stopped rubbing before burning through.
