1969 Chevy TKO-500 swap begins!

Just took my truck into the shop today to begin the Tremec/Turbo 400 swap!

Here's what's going in: 12" Centerforce Dual Friction clutch, 37.5# Centerforce billet flywheel, Wilwood clutch master cylinder w/ remote mount reservoir, Hurst stick, GM '621' Bellhousing, McLeod hydraulic throwout bearing, Energy Suspension poly trans mount., and a set of stock GM pedals from a '68 C10.

The truck currently has a 454, with a column shifter and Turbo 400 trans. I'll keep the progress posted, and hopefully get some pics up soon.

Did you gut a TKO kit like one of these?

http://www.classicchevy5speed.com/GM...it-Select.aspx

Or just piece it together yourself? Either way im interested to see how this works out for ya.

Re: 1969 Chevy TKO-500 swap begins!

slow72-
I ordered a kit from www.standardtransmission.com (less bellhousing, clutch and pp) and installed it in my 1992 C1500 a few years back. When I got this '69, the 92 had to go, so I put a stock tranny back in the 92, and kept the TKO for the 69. I hope the swap is as easy to do in the '69 as it was in the '92 C1500. I did it in about 8-10 hours the first time around...

Re: 1969 Chevy TKO-500 swap begins!

Got a few pics of the finished swap. It was getting dark out, so the pics could be better, I'll post the underbody pics in some good light and give you guys the run down soon. Wasn't too bad. Had to fab up a clutch linkage for the hydraulic t/o bearing, but I have room to run headers, since I only have a steel braided line running down to the tranny instead of the bulky and hard to find factory BB brackets for a man trans. I just added a factory clutch pedal to the end of the existing auto trans pedal assembly and had a bracket welded to the pedal arm and ran the linkage from there. I went ahead and got a new driveshaft (shorter), and had to move the crossmember back. I have a factory tach conversion that'll be going in next so I can keep up with the 454! It'll be nice the cruise at 70 without worrying about rpms, plus I'm hoping to beat the 10-12 mpg (hwy) I was getting before.

Re: 1969 Chevy TKO-500 swap begins!

Hey bosshoggs. You may have mentioned it but I couldn't find it in your post. Is your tko
Shifter located in the original location more toward the rear or did you have to relocate it to the middle mount.

How is the swap working out? We have a ‘72 C10 currently being repainted that will be in the shop a bit longer. We currently have a TH350 w/3.08’s. The gearing is horrible. With the Tremec TKX coming out, we’re considering a TKX and rear gear swap. Your TKO swap looks great on the interior!

How is it working out?
How do you like the position of the shifter?
What position is your shifter?

Our interior will keep the bench seat so we’d like to see how you like your set up.

Thanks!
