testing a torque wrench ?

I picked up a 16 inch torgue wrench, ft. pounds at a garage sale. If I set the torque at 30 lbs. and put a 30 lbs. weight on the end in a vice and clicks should be good right? I couldn,t understand the u tube vids as LxW divided by 12 in. which would make it around 44 lbs. I,m thinking at the 12. inch mark on the wrench it would be 44 lbs. not at 16 inch.Math aarg

not sure which vid you watched...
but if you measure 1ft from center of the head down the handle then 30# of weight should click the wrench when its set on 30#....
if you hang the same 30# at the 16in mark on the handle the wrench should click if set on 39.9#.....or 40lb for simple..
length x weight = torque
1ft x. 30lb. = 30lb

at the 16 mark of handle it would be 1 and 1/3 ft or 1ft plus 4in. it = 1.33ft

1.33ft × 30lb = 39.9lb.....so 30# hung at 16in should click at 40# on the wrench..

I cheat,,,, bought one of these

and the ONLY thing it gets used for is to check my other torque wrenches. It's certified from the factory and when I compared it to my certified Proto inch pound, and a foot-pound torque wrench it was dead on to the inch / and 1/2 pound (as close as I could set on the Proto scale). It only goes up to 60 pounds but if it's good at 10# intervals up to there,,, I have to assume it's good to 100.

It stays put away and I use it ONLY to check my working torque wrenches. It's AMAZING how for off the cheap torque wrenches get in time. Have one I bought from Jeggs that is about 5 years old and was 'close' when new. But is now off 13 pounds at 50. That's considerable if your torquing rod bolts and such!

at this stage in the game, I use my elbow most often..

but when I'm serious about torque, NIST traceable and only one of them has been to cal once..

killer b....ill see your 1200# and raise you 3000#....that's what we just got at work. 2 of the hytorc 3000# digital impacts...you know its big $$ when they offer you financing on a impact ..ours were $12, 000 each....bad thing is we've broke both of them...

I know my dad's torque wrench is so far off it is pointless to use.
