Wires leading into Ignition Smoking, Crackling, Very hot!

Need help figuring out what happened:

No new changes to the blazer (other than new battery). The Ignition switch is newer (1.5 years old).

Anybody have any ideas on why this would suddenly happen?

Can you determine which wire is burning out? Does it happen with the key in ON?

Do you have points ignition or HEI?

Yeah I should have time this weekend to get under to see which wire. I did some reading (correct me if Im wrong), the "purple" wire is usually the Starter Selenoid which is a common problem with smoking ignition wires?

What ignition are you running? stock points?

Did it happen while trying to start it or was the key left in the ON position?

Re: Wires leading into Ignition Smoking, Crackling, Very hot!

It was smoking while it was idling. Was idling for about 1-2 minutes then heard the crackling then the smelled the well known burning wire smell.

Few days prior I could smell a hint of burning wire when I went for a 10 mile cruise. At that time I could not locate where the smell was coming from.

Last night was the first time I could visually see the smoke and feel the hot wires.

Thank you for your interest on my new issue. I will get under dash tomorrow morning to locate color of burnt wire.

I found time to rummage around in the dash just now. Here is the picture. Looks like the Purple and the Black melted together which also melted the ignition. Hard to say which one melted first?

There's no pic posted. But my guess is you need a new ignition plug and switch.
