Fuel tank

1970 k10

Yes another fuel tank question, did a quick search but I'm looking for some specific info.

The project I'm currently picking up doesn't have a tank/mounting hardware so I'm looking to go with a larger than stock option and needs opinions on both the tank and where to pickup the mounts/straps.

I've heard people talk about using the later model tanks. Classicindustries sells various year specific tanks and I'm looking at picking up a 40gal from a 74-81 for $100.

What other items do I need to pickup and where can I get them. Also will need a sending unit, can a pickup a stock one for my year suburban and run it in this one? Yes it does have lines plumbed to the back.

Thanks in advance

Re: Fuel tank

This is the tank I'm speaking of:
http://www.classicindustries.com/pro...s/ft5022a.html
Made for 86-91 suburbans, they do have a 74-81 non-FI model but I do plan to run FI at some point.

For others that have done this will this model fit within the frame of a 72 k10. I know I will have to relocate the crossmember, not a big deal my concern is the width of the tank to frame.

Second, will the original fuel sending unit out of the 72 fit this tank? If not do they sell the SU that will work with the stock gauges? Assuming I need to pickup a 90 and not a 30?

Re: Fuel tank

You might check with Richard2717 to see if he saved any extra crossmembers on any of his recent part-outs. It's the same part in a pickup truck and there might be a frame part-out in that area.

I used these straps and this sending unit.

The sending unit is a 0-90 ohm unit as compared to the original 0-30 ohm (from my reading). Soldering a 45 ohm 1/4 watt resister in parallel will correct the reading.

The tank fits perfectly between the frame rails

The biggest obstacle is the placement of the filler neck. Heating the solder up and spinning it around seemed easiest. But then you still need a long piece of filler neck hose. And they are not very flexible. The OD of the factory filler neck and the later model one is about 1/4 in difference. That needs a work-around also.

Since I was going aftermarket gauges anyway I elected to move the filler neck to the corner and place the aftermarket sending unit in the hole left by the filler neck. I also glued a rubber spacer in the filler hose to seal it to the Suburban filler neck tube.

Re: Fuel tank

I've been reading old threads and from what I gather all sending units after 66 use the 90ohm sending units. This is where I'm confused because it differs from each thread and some are quite old.

I plan to use stock gauges and if I upgrade I plan to use the "updated" original style that's sold through many vendors like brothers or lmc.

So which is it for the original gas gauge, 30 or 90ohm?

Re: Fuel tank

Another q, when searching for that resistor what do I type in to the almighty google. It's coming up with everything except the one I need!

Re: Fuel tank

Here is the best thread on 67-72 fuel guages. It says 90 ohms.
