How low without flip kit?

Has anyone ever gotten their truck low without flipping the rear? I have a 86swb that is currently lowered with 1.25 coils cut and a leaf removed. I wanted to add spindles up front and add shackles in the rear and possibly remove another leaf. Has anyone done this? What are pro's and con's of this vs a flip kit?

How would a shackle make it ride like crap? Just curious

With rear hangers/shackles...you'll get 4", but you'll have to trim some bed braces for clearance, at least on a fleetside, not sure about a step side. A flip is 5/6 inches depending on who you talk to.

My guess is the shocks. If you stay with stock they will be compressed more and not working at proper angles, thus left absorbing. If you go with the shorter shocks, you'll still lose ride because of the less range you'll have to damper. It will be better that the first situation, but still not as good as stock. Leaf springs are not as nearly as smooth as the 72 & earlier coils anyways.

Re: How low without flip kit?

Thank you. If it wasn't already lowered some i would consider a flip but right now that will lower it too much. I don't mind cutting a bed support.

For shocks I was wanting to use stock with extenders

Re: How low without flip kit?

Removing leafs changes the spring rate. Wheel hop is common as well as reduced cargo capacity.

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

Cubic inches is like Indiana Jones with a cheap pistol.

Re: How low without flip kit?

My worn out 305 hasn't presented any wheel hop issues in the 10 years I've been driving it. Reduced load capacity was an issue before lowering it, most s10s have a higher gvw. My truck has a 5200 gvw. With one leaf out i have noticed some extra sqaut

Wheel hop w/removed leafs is common on acceleration & hard braking. Me personally..... I wouldn't have a truck that can't be used as a truck. I build to maintain hauling capacity.

Re: How low without flip kit?

68longhorn, I would consider doing the axle flip and then bringing it back up as much as you want it. Unless you want even more pliability in the rear springs than you have now, I'd leave that spring pack alone get spring perches welded on the other side of the axle and flip it. I'm considering this myself along with K truck spring hangers and shackle mounts as necessary to bring it back up just a little bit.
