Re: Maxi Frig refrigerant for old AC? Is It Real?

So the package has arrived. I just need to get fittings now. And I need to track down A vacuum leak on the car.

Re: Maxi Frig refrigerant for old AC? Is It Real?

I am just attempting a sort of band aid fix until I can get the money together and knowledge to fix them for good. I have purchased a Hose crimper for the AC, and arguably could save some money by not buying snake oils. But working on the AC in much cooler weather is what I would like to do. Besides, I am itching to get in the Bel Air and cruise around with some cool air flowing. Pretty sure the heater is on all the time too as I think that valve down in the fender well is bypassed.

This is interesting stuff. I never heard of alternative refrigerants before this.

I read all the instructions on the link. Unless unless im just missing it, I don’t see where is says no vacuum is required with this stuff. Just no need to flush out the old oil. Although I did see where it said it wasn’t corrosive with moisture.

Re: Maxi Frig refrigerant for old AC? Is It Real?

Back in the day, we used to do a "sweep" of the system, which entailed putting in refrigerant and then venting it. Do it a few times, and there will be very little air and/or moisture left. Usually done after a replacement of a part, and the system got a new receiver dryer as part of the deal. You can do the "sweep" with a refrigerant that isn't controlled like R-12, since R-290, for example, is not considered an ozone depleter. Thus, you would not have to evacuate the system.

Well boo! I went to try to put some in and the adjuster pulley bearing is shot. So off come the belt and I am awaiting a new bearing.

Just go to Sam's or costco and get a 4 pack of air duster. It works great. We have 3 vehicles running it for 3 years. All doing well and blowing cold.

Use a can tap like you do with the small cans of r-12, r-134, etc.

You need to pull a vaccum.

What oil do you use with that? And it's expensive right?

Just the regular pag oil stuff. The 4 pack of air duster is about $10. You will use 2-3 of them.

Re: Maxi Frig refrigerant for old AC? Is It Real?

Well I went to get this going and I was plagued by carb issues ongoing in my other thread. It appears there is too much rust either in the tank or failing steel lines. Both are being replaced as well as the carb. I also have an AC hose and drier kit on the way as I do not see a drier anywhere. Right noe the lines are all rubber on the AC and held on with hose clamps. I have seen this same thing in junk yards with systems still charged and having Sanden compressors.

Re: Maxi Frig refrigerant for old AC? Is It Real?

Well I put a can of this in my Trans Am and it blew ice cubes. It leaked out in three days versus one day when I put 134a in it. I cannot wait to try it in my Belair.

Re: Maxi Frig refrigerant for old AC? Is It Real?

I finally got the beast running well enough to give it a quick charge. One can in and it was 42 degrees at the vents. It seems to work well. Then I saw the heater core puking on the floor! Dangit!

Does anybody know if Maxi Frig is still available? I looked at their website and doesn't show anything. A couple co-workers swear by this stuff blowing colder.

I know this is 3 years old but if you check the MDS, Innovera air duster is 134a
