Re: License Plate "tag cover"

It's been a REAL long time since I've bought one, but I do remember the chrome or stainless frames that cover the tag on the sides, but are slightly smaller on the front sides all come with a flimsy thin plexiglass-like cover. Maybe that's where the description comes from?

Re: License Plate "tag cover"

I think "tag cover" means exactly that. The frame covers the tags and places you at risk of being pulled over. I sent a question to two of the vendors of these on ebay and got only the outside measurements back. Local cops with laser plate readers are a reality in may areas too.

Here in Nebraska we call them License plate frames as you suggest. However when I spent time in Texas they always referred their license plates as tags. I remember one old guy saying " he was fixin to go get his tags on his new truck" . I figured out he was going to get plates. Regional thing. Always fun to hear the Texas people talk. Even funnier, after I was there for about a week I started talking like them. Ya all have a good day.

Re: License Plate "tag cover"

When I bought my Seahawks plates for My ot rig I found some thin line chrome frames at Fred Meyers I think. They just cover the edge of the plate and are real simple and not too spendy.

On my truck I bent one of those trailer tag or flat bed tag brackets so it looped around the bumper and fastened behind the nut on the back of the center bolt. That put the plate in the middle of the bumper.

Simple and no cost for me as I had the bracket in my shed saved from something I took apart.

Re: License Plate "tag cover"

Some states, like Idaho, do not require the front plate vintage vehicles if they were not required to have one. In 1959 trucks only had rear plates, so I am just running the rear and welded up the from bumper bracket holes. Might check your state regs.

The 54 was equipped with places for front an rear plates. The front having its own bracket as standard and the rear a scallop in the bumper. Prices of local plate frames are really out of sight and would be nice to get some off ebay like these:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2pcs-Sliver-...3D262565852085

But afraid they will be unusable due to covering registration tags. I might add i was once given a ticket by a CHP for incorrectly displaying the rear plate within the scallop. I went to court arned with the 54 shop manual and the judge tossed the ticket out chiding the CHP officer.

Re: License Plate "tag cover"

I have one on my 56 that I've had for many years (really need to pull it and detail it)
Similar to what your looking for and doesn't cover the decal. Maybe try the swap meets to find something out of the ordinary...
