drag link problems

I just noticed today that my drag link is loose on the steering arm side and so what I am wondering is how in the world do you tighten it. The bolt just spins around and also the whole thing can wobble side to side. Is something broke or am I just doing something wrong.

P.S. its a 77 half ton.

Re: drag link problems

Take it out of the tapered hole in the steering arm and see if its egged out. Check the TRE too to see if its damaged or sloppy. If all looks good, clean the threads up, clean the taper, clean the tapered hole. Put it back in the hole and hold down on it while you tighten the nut and torque it to 45ftlb and then to the nearest hole.

Re: drag link problems

I can't loosen the nut because that bolt just spins around. Are you saying that the bolt is tapered and thats what gives you pressure to tighten it. if that taper wore down enouph am i going to have to cut it off.

Re: drag link problems

I think I'd just figure on replacing that end.You can just cut the nut/shank off.Be sure to inspect pitman arm for wear.I replaced both my drag link ends and still had play in my steering. It was the sector shaft end (steering box) of the pitman arm, which is splined, that was worn. It's hard to isolate play when more than one piece is sloppy sometimes

Re: drag link problems

Yeah i figured i would need to end up replacing it, just wondered if there was any trick to getting it off. Do you just replace the whole draglink or can you get just one end from where it threads in at the middle? Where would you recommend getting these parts?

Re: drag link problems

I just replaced the drag link on one of my 3/4 ton 4x4 72's last night. I used my air hammer with a pickle fork to wedge the tie rod end in order to get the nut off. Use something to wedge it tight and then you can take the nut off. You need to replace the tie rod end anyway, so don't worry about messing up the rubber boot.

Re: drag link problems

I got my parts at Carquest, the tie rod ends are Moog, made in the USA. If you don't have an adjustable drag link, you can buy the new parts for about $80. In my case, I had the original drag link that was not adjustable.

Re: drag link problems

remember to take measurememts of the old assembly so you know how far to screw the new drag link end into the adjuster sleave.
