Roller cam suggestions for a 4x4 383

I am currently building a vortec 383 for a 79 4x4 blazer. I am using an 880 vortec block that has been decked and bored .030 over. I am going with an eagle balanced rotating assembly with 18cc dish because I want the compression around 9.5 so I can run 87 octane. I am using a set of 062 vortec heads that have been ported and polished only on the exhaust side and has a new valve job, back cut valves and provisions for .550 lift. Is there a roller cam that anyone may suggest that would work well in this set up? I was looking at the ramjet cam, but it looks a bit small, however, a lot of the comp 4x4 cams look really big. What do yall think?

Re: Roller cam suggestions for a 4x4 383

I know what you mean by the RamJet cam looks small, but GM also uses that same cam in the HT383 crate engine. I think a set of 1.6 rockers as they used in the RamJet 350 might help it's performance in a 383. That cam can be had for quite reasonable too. In a 4x4 you don't want too big of a cam as it will move your torque band higher up in the rpm range.

As a reference, years ago we built a SB400 for my son using Vortec heads and a Comp XE4262 cam (flat tappet). I was quite impressed with how much power that engine had with a relatively small cam.

I should have mentioned, I also have a set of comp 1.6 ratio roller tip rockers on hand.

This is what I went this for my 383 build, but mine has more compression, and aluminum heads - it’s also going in a 4X2 street truck:

Not knowing a ton about your build, I’d check this out:

Re: Roller cam suggestions for a 4x4 383

I think if you used them with the 14097395 cam, you would have a 383 with excellent low to mid range power. If those are not self aligning rockers, you will need to install guide plates on the Vortec heads.

That cam used to be a lot less $$ before it got popular. It is still a decent deal.

That cam has a bit too much duration for use in a 4x4

Re: Roller cam suggestions for a 4x4 383

Thank yall for the input. The 1.6 rockers I have are self aligning.

Re: Roller cam suggestions for a 4x4 383

This is the cam I am using in my Suburban. I am using an 880 block with flat tops and aluminum heads topped with a Stealth Ram manifold.

comp cam 268XFI. Idles with 15-16 inches of vacuum.
