JRDV Green 69 SWB $X$

A little history first. I bought this truck off E-bay. I only had it in my watch list with no intention of buying it. I watched it for the last 30 minutes of the auction and decided it was too good to pass up. I paid $3601, plus it was only 250 miles from me.
It was just as described, except for a possible cracked head. It was 2 gallons low on coolant and a quart low on oil. The valve covers and intake bolts were leaking lot of oil, but I degreased and tightened everthing and have no more leaks.
The motor was rebuilt about 12,000 miles and 10 years ago. The tranny was rebuilt about 9,000 miles ago and the brakes were completely redone 6,000 miles ago. It can be driven anywhere ( take a little antifreeze along!!) and cruises at 70 MPH with no effort.
The cool factor is that I have a notebook with every receipt of work done since 1974 (including oil changes). I have the build sheet, owners manual in excellent shape, and the brail metal dealer tag with the orginal owners name.
The truck was repainted about 15 years ago, but has the original paint in the bed. It always had a camper on it so there is no rust and very few scratches.

The only rust is in the rockers and a little on the back of the hood edge and a little on top of the cowl ledge.

MY PLAN:
I want to keep it as original as possible with a few mods.
I will replace the cab mounts, steering wheel ( got a mint green on with no cracks), wheels and tires ( 16 inch steelies and 285/75/16 Interco TRUXS tires),
and either a 2 or 4 inch lift.
New trim.
New floor mat
Factory tack and tilt column.
Maybe a new motor--I bought a crate 383 for the 72 4x4, but I may put it in this one. Either way I am going to put a Retrotek EFI on this motor. I haven't bought it yet, but plan to when I decide which truck gets the motor and have time to put it in. I may just put new heads on this motor and drive the heck out of it!!
Now for some pics
PS--check out the license plate---the lady at the DMV found me one with 69 on it!!!

The paint and chrome were pretty dull, but polished up decent

Re: JRDV Green 69 SWB $X$

First I tried metal polish on the rims--no luck. Second I used sand paper and steel wool---worked but took too much time. Third, I broke out the grinder with the steel brush. Works great, but will still have to use sand paper and steel wool.
Now before you bash me...I'm not real crazy about the rims and will replace them later. I might put them on the 72 blazer!

The grill is in great shape. It had some rusty discoloration along the bottom of the grill, but it cleaned off with a little steel wool persuasion! It you look close you can see little pits, but from a distance it isn't too bad.
I will probably paint the black on the side trim untill I get some new trim.

The interior is in good shape. Just needs a new rubber floor mat, steering wheel, tilt, and tach.

Even for a GMC I must say that is one sweet truck I see why you could not pass it up. Nice find.

Thanks Kevin,
You do some great work!

Here is a pick for fun. I'm already picking up babes with the new truck

I had a cow with twins, but she abandoned this one during a snow storm two nights ago. After I spent 3 evenings cleaning the truck up--I then took it out during the storm and put a calf in the back!!

Rob,
I would love to see your projects sometime. I actually try and avoid ABQ ( too many folks for this hermit!!!!!!!!!). If I make it down that way I will give you a call. By the way, I'll look for a chevy tailgate for you--there are a few truck guys in Raton I can check with.
If you ever get up north give me call.

Thanks,
What part of Kansas are you in. I'm only about 70 miles from the SW corner.
Good luck with the Beater.

Any help on a tailgate would be appreciated. All of my projects are still in FL. Well, I recently picked up a 70 GMC Suburban with a factory big block, ps, pb and a/c.........

Re: JRDV Green 69 SWB $X$

Congrats on the suburban. One of these days I may pick up one!
Did you see the blue one on E-bay--it was in ABQ. I thought about getting it, but I think the wife would shoot me. She actually took this purchase pretty good. It is number nine for the 67-72's, but I have a few other toys too. I also have been eyeballing the 4-door in the FS section.
I'm hoping her bathroom remodel will keep her joyfull for a while!

It sounds like you are in for a good roadtrip to get your projects. Heck, I might even be interested if you decide to go get them! As long as you don't mind a bar stop every so often!!

LOL! I didn't realize the 68 was in ABQ, that would have been a great buy! I was checking the 4 Door out too, like I need another project, . How far are you from ABQ?

Re: JRDV Green 69 SWB $X$

I'm about 3.5-4 hours away. All the way up I-25 then 45 miles east of Raton.
How about you get the four-door, fix it up, and store it at my house!
I had to go back and look at the burb on E-bay. It is a 72--I didn't see the 68.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...216778038&rd=1

You need to post some pic of the new burb--do you have it in ABQ?

I bought a crate 383 for the 72 4x4, but I am enjoying driving the 69 so much that it may get the new motor. I really can't decide!

Ask and you shall recieve!
It is a 1975 406 with 6500 Km and 460 hours on it. I bought it to feed hay in deep snow, plus it has a snowplow. Fun machine!
