Re: my new to me 1986 chevy sub

If I turbo it I will proably just swap a 6.5 in it but that will only come after the 6.2 dies. I dOnt need to fly up the highway so the 6.2 does all I need it to plus it gets great fuel mileage. So why mess with it.

There are also some low costs things you can do to help that 6.2 as well.

1. Biggest bang for the buck will be a free flow exhaust. The stock setup is very restrictive. A super single 3" works well. Or if you want a mean sounding setup, go with dual 2.5" / H-pipe and some old fashioned Thrush / Walker glasspack mufflers.

2. J code air handler (intake manifold). This air handler has no EGR. Or if you want to save some money, you can simply chip out the EGR pedestal.

3. BHAF (Big Honkin Air Filter). Basically, stack 2 air filters on top of each other.

Of course to take advantage of all of this, you'll need to turn up the injection pump.

Re: my new to me 1986 chevy sub

Exhaust plans are to build one of the exhaust adapters by a dr lee swagger from over on the diesel forum an run 3" from 2.5 adapters back with proably flowmasters not sure if it's a j code or c code motor had t checked yet. I got a 6" k&n filter I could put on but would have would have to make a top for the filter. I do plan to install some hot glow plugs eventually

If you've read up on Dr. Lee Swagger, you've got the right idea.

1/2 ton Suburbans would have come stock with a C code motor.

K&N's are OK as long as you don't drive down dusty roads. They don't tend to filter out the dust as well as a paper element filter.

Bypass that glow plug controller with a push button before it causes you grief. But make sure you select the right glow plugs that can handle extended glow plug times. I'm using AC Delco 60G but there might be something preferable right now.

I wired up an automotive 30 amp solenoid to engage the glow plug solenoid. My push button engages the 30 amp solenoid which then engages the glow plug solenoid. The glow plug solenoid is bolted to the inner side of the drivers side fender.

If you do this, you want glow plugs that won't burn up with extended time.

Glow plug controllers are expensive and when they do go out, you're pretty much stuck.
