surpentine belt question
the alternator in my daily driver is shot, and I never taken a surpentine belt off before, which I need to do to change the alternator, I see it has what looks like a densioner, with a 3/4 '' nut on it, do I put a wrench on it and pry on the densioner to loosen the belt? any help would be appreciated.

Some vehicles have a square hole so that you can put a ratchet or pull bar in it to hold the tension off so that you can change the belt. If not, yes that should work.

this thing is like the size of a puck, and looks like it has a coil spring in it, like its spring loaded

Yup... turn it with a socket, and breaker bar to de-tension the belt for removal, at the same time.... there is no lock position to hold the tensioner.. that's what your for, one hand on the bar, one to remove the belt. Pay very close attention to the belt pattern.. should have a picture of it under hood somewhere, but they do get hard to read after some years.

It should have a square like the backside of sockets do somewhere on the arm like roberty said!!! All you have to do is put a breaker bar/rachet in the hole and pry it back slide out the old belt and put the new one on.
