Column assembly. Bail me out

Ok, feeling kinda stupid here.. Tore this apart over a year ago. This is a 68, 4spd. No linkage. Should be easy right?
I get where the bearing should go, but does the spring really press directly on the bearing? Doesn't seem right..
And what the hell is that big washer? Wheres it go? The hole is too big that I can tell.
Where does the felt go in the tube? Inside the tube? Behind the bearing?
Am I missing parts maybe, I don't think so as I had it all bagged.
Chime in and bail me out. Thanks

Re: Column assembly. Bail me out

I've never tore one apart, but judging by the picture looks like that big washer goes on the bottom of bearing then the spring against it, Not sure where that felt goes unless it goes inside of the lower part of column.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.. Maybe someone else will chime in...

Re: Column assembly. Bail me out

Yeah, that's what I thought on the washer. But the spring just falls through it. Hole too big..

Re: Column assembly. Bail me out

Just wanted to add, the washer fits the inside diameter of the tube perfectly..

Re: Column assembly. Bail me out

I looked at my Haynes manual from 67-87 chevy trucks and it didn't really show any step by step pictures, It just told how to disassemble but no pictures you know what they say a picture is worth a thousand words..it did however say to remove the felt seal from the shifter tube....surely somebody on here knows how it goes together. Wish I could be more help...

Re: Column assembly. Bail me out

I just re-did my column on my 71 a while back and if I remember correctly the washer that you show in the phot goes between 12 end 3 on the diagram in your post! On the top end of your column you have a white plastic piece and that washer sits below it to keep iit from being pushed too far down the tube when you tighten the assembly down! The padding goes on the lower end and it just keeps the dirt out of the tube! Let me know if you need any more help with it I wish that I had taken pictures when I had mine tore apart!.....dwt.

Re: Column assembly. Bail me out

Also the way you have the bearing, spring, and locker in your photo is correct the only thing that you are missing is the heavy duty washer that goes with then its in the diagram in your post! The hole in the washer is the diameter of the shaft and it is twice as thick as the washer in the above picture!......dwt.

Shawn,

The column in this thread has the shift levers but it may help you out some...

Let me know if you need the big washer that goes under the spring. I have a couple of extras.

Re: Column assembly. Bail me out

Update, didn't find the stock washer, but had one plenty thick, and fit the shaft perfectly. The diameter is a little smaller, but don't see that being an issue..
Thanks to everyone for the help and chiming in. Finished product
