Hard starting problems on my 5.3

Here lately the 5.3 in my '02 Z71 has been hard to start. Instead of just turning the key and it starting I have to turn the key and let it crank a couple seconds more before it starts sometimes giving it a little bump on the gas. It is an automatic with around 135k miles on it. I did a typical tune up at 100k of plugs wires. I also just recentlt replaced the fuel pressure regulator. This problem has been with me for close to a year. Any ideas?

Re: Hard starting problems on my 5.3

A few things I have found that cause a hard start with your model are the fuel pressure regulator leaking, fuel pump failing or intake gaskets leaking causing a lean cold start. I would start by running the engine until warm, shut it off and disconnect the vacuum hose at the pressure regulator. Place a small piece of paper over the vacuum port on the regulator. The paper will get wet or change color if the regulator is leaking or seeping. This may take a while. If you have a fuel pressure gauge, monitor fuel pressure with the engine off and make sure the fuel system maintains pressure while the engine is off. If the pressure drops its usually either the regulator or the pump allowing pressure to bleed off. I doubt the intake gaskets are leaking because that usually causes a cold start stall condition.

Sounds like a after you shut off the vehicle fuel is leaking back into the tank. The first time you try to start it, re-primes the system. The second time, it finally starts.

Re: Hard starting problems on my 5.3

Hej .. have u ever tried to check your obd II live datas.

I had the same problem and checked all the datas I could get
using my obdIIscanner.

After I have changed sparks, ing cable, fuel pressure regulator
and the fuel pump inkl filter and checking the ignition coils
I got the solution.

Took a long time ...
