Big block advice

Hey guys I'm new to the forum and I have been enjoying scrolling through talks project threads. Now I'm sure my question has been beat to death but I'm not finding the answers Im looking for. I have a 58 Apache step side and I picked up a big block for it. I was wanting to use the original style engine mounts for it ( is this possible? Or do I need to get a crossmember?) I have heard that the original steering box might have some interference with the block is this true? And last question is will some block hugger headers fit the original frame?

Re: Big block advice

Hy 58Yellow, I'm remember a kit that allowed big block installation in the 55 - 57 Chevies using the stock mounts, Hurst maybe, I did make up some engine brackets when I tried to install a big block into my 59 40 series tow truck, but I encountered valve cover to firewall interference, hope that helps.

Re: Big block advice

Yes that helps thanks for the advice. I'll do some more research on those mounts. Did you have to massage your firewall to obtain clearance?

Re: Big block advice

I just put a small block 383 striker in mine. I have about 1/4 inch clearance between my narrowed headers and the steering box. Maybe there is a kit, but I can't see how you'd get a big block in there using the type of mounts you are talking about and the stock steering.

Re: Big block advice

I have a 454 and car 4 speed in my '58. I'll have to look and see what mounts are on it. As far as I know it has no firewall massaging done and doesn't hit the steering box. My truck currently uses all stock frame and suspension. I also have long tube headers on mine as well. Unfortunately I bought mine this way, so I have no idea what they are from.

Re: Big block advice

I checked at lunch time. It has had the firewall massaged. Don't know how I missed that, lol. They used a universal tube type engine mount. It does clear the steering box. The header is very close to it though.
