58 1/2 ton posi ?? w/tb ?
i got a 1958 gmc carryall /napco 4 wd 1/2 ton,been looking for a posi unit for it ! its a 1/2 ton ,drop out center w 3 : 90 gearing ! was they available in them yrs ?what else will fit the carrier ?

If it's stock NAPCO stop, DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING, it's valuable as is!

Ditto, very hard to come by. I do not know if posi is available for the stock truck. Finding a newer one to match the track width will be a challenge. IF you do keep the original to go with the truck to the next guy. I have 74 K10 open axles with 3.73 ratio under my 59 and in 15 years, a lot off road in the boonies in all weather I ran out of nerve before I ran out of traction. Only time I got stuck posi would not have helped, had to winch it out. Wish I had some pictures of it in the snow hunting in the Sawtooths...

Orrie, you are not trying hard enough. I had a '78 K10, open axles and 3.73's and I got it stuck quite a bit. It had 12.5x33 tires and they would not climb out of a snow rut, just too wide.

i was told by a gm truck dealr mechanic /that them " 55-59 drop out centers" are "eatons "? just get a posi center,change side gears and it will work ??? ANYBODY KNOW IF THIS IS TRUE ??? thanks mike

Yup, eaton axles. I know detroit lockers *called No-Spin back then* were available for the larger 8 lug full floater eatons. Don't know about the half ton. They are no longer available new of course, but you can use a detroit locker for a 14bolt FF chevy axle in the 8 lug eatons carrier if you also use the 14b axle shafts to match.
Half ton you may be stuck with an open diff if you want to keep the factory axle. |
