Full Time Dana 60al

I just acquired a 1977 Chevy K30 SRW standard cab from Arizona. According to the info in the glove box it was originally bought in New Mexico and spent all of its life in Arizona, as far as I can tell it still retains the original 350 and is a factory 4-speed truck with 205 case. The body is very solid. The cab and frame are in great condition with very little outer cab corner work needing to be done. Front fenders and hood are junk. It must have sat under a pine tree at one time and the needles worked there way down to start the rotting process. This truck also came with factory bucket seats that I need to track down. Enough about the truck. I always thought that if the truck had a part time transfer case and manual trans it should have lockouts on the axle.
I bought it with some cheap lockouts on it but they did not work correctly and were very loose in the hub. I bought some original lockouts on eBay. I went to install them and there was no outer groove in the hub to hold the lockout body in the hub. It was smooth all the way out. I looked in my parts book and it did not show a locking hub break down for 77-78 trucks with Dana 60 just the full time drive gear and dust cap. I checked my later parts book and it shows the lockouts for the Dana 60's coming into view in 1979. I checked my '79 GMC and sure enough it had the groove at the outside of the hub for the snap ring.
Did 77-78 one ton trucks come with full time hubs regardless of wheather it was a manual or auto trans? Thanks for any help.

Re: Full Time Dana 60al

I think your truck MAY have originally came with a NP 203 which might explain the hubs on the front.
Does the shift indicator plate on the trans hump have the correct pattern for your 205?

The truck does have the correct plate with the 4L N 2H 4H on it. Correct round handle as well. Looks like it's been there from new. Nothing else on the truck throws up any red flags. I don't think it was swapped. I'm thinking that's the way it came?

Re: Full Time Dana 60al

Very interesting. It sounds like GM didn't have faith in any lockout hubs for a 1 ton truck in 77 and 78. I have never seen a 77 K30 in person so I always considered them kinda rare. I wonder what was holding your original cheap hubs in there?

I consider the 77 K30's rare because it is the first year for 4wd on a one ton chassis in that body style anyway. I have been looking for one for quite some time. I appreciate your reply. Here's some pictures.

Thanks Jeff, I do have two real nice GM fenders with the trim on them. One has the correct color molding on it the other is black. It's nice the holes are already there so no drilling. I will have to get the yellow paint matched as close as possible to paint all the black molding. The previous owner removed all the molding and sanded the truck into paint it back to original colors. When I bought it all the trim was missing including the tailgate band! I have an NOS door for the passenger side. Here's a picture of the SPID.

Re: Full Time Dana 60al

i have a original 77k30 . 34k miles on it . i could go pull a full time drive slug cap and check for the grove for you tho .

easy to spot early trucks .

pass side king pin cap on dana 60 is cast iron NOT tin . first year or so only .

front spring hangers for rear springs were 2wd short . this gets you a factory 3" block WITH bump stop ear in the rear to make up the difference .

mine was a th400/203 truck and had a 2 piece drive shaft with carrier bearing . front shaft was around a foot or so . . .

if i recall been years but i do think they didnt have the grove . would be easy for someone to chuck up in a lathe and cut it in tho .

Thanks for your reply. Good to know there's another early K30 guy out there. You are correct into have the short front rear spring brackets with the block and earbfirvthe bump stop. I was not aware of the cast cap however. My drive shaft is a two piece as well. This truck also came with factory buckets but for some reason is not on the SPID. The inner brackets are factory and not added. Here are some pictures of the inside cab and truck.

Re: Full Time Dana 60al

pop us up a pic of the back of the transfer case .

help you dial it all in . to know what ya got .

another true tell of a k30 in square body is rear shock frame mounts are inside the frame rails . 1/2 - 3/4 tons got them outside unless the light duty 3/4 ton crew cab they are just under sprung 1tons.

your rpo code sheet shows gov-loc rear posi . and the tire size might be the rarish 9.75" wide 16.5 rims . have to measure to be sure .

I will have to get that pic of the rear of the t-case. The rear shocks are on the inside of the frame and frame measures 8" in the center. I was happy to see that it came stock with the wide wheels but have never seen the 9.725 just the narrower 8.25 which is what I put on. I bought it with some '88 and up wheels and tires. This is the first one ton I have owned with the factory deep wheels.

That's a great looking truck. I'd hate to see that happen to such a nice original ride, plus you would have to put some sort of a body lift for cab clearance for the transfer case. That just looks bad and you have to cut or lengthen so many other things. It's your truck, just my two cents. Would you have a picture of your '77 K30?

Sorry I was thinking of a previous post from a different member for the '77. Both of your trucks are real nice. They sit nice. I always liked flat beds on dual rear wheel trucks. There very useful. Whenever you get time please post some pictures of the tailgate band. I need the tall one for YE9 option. Thanks.

Thanks for all the pictures. Looks to be in good shape. No dents or scratches? What are you asking for it? I just bought the fender name plates on a different sight. Probably paid to much. Let me know what your asking for those as well? May want an extra set. You can PM me if you rather.

Re: Full Time Dana 60al

It has two little scratches about the size of a dime and I don't know what you paid for your fender emblems but I paid $310.00 shipped I'd take $125.00 plus shipping for the tailgate band
