66 C30 Wrecker

I just got a 66 wrecker today. 250, 4spd, Holmes 440. I'm going to use my 65 for parts. here are the craigslist pics, and one of the 65. I will take some better ones when I pick it up Monday. It needs some work but it runs and drives and the wrecker works, I just need to buy some chains.

Re: 66 C30 Wrecker

Nice!

I drove a wheel lift wrecker for almost a year. I loved the job, hated the pay and hours. But I would love to build one for fun.

Re: 66 C30 Wrecker

Thanks, I drove a wrecker too for awhile. It was a fun job but I agree the hours suck. AAA didn't pay good, but we were on the State Police list for I95 between the accidents and drug dealer impounds I did OK I only used rollbacks and the wheel lift I never needed the sling I guess I'm going to learn.

45k original miles on it. Best money i spent. You going to do a restore and use it or just keep it around for the fun of it like i am.

Re: 66 C30 Wrecker

I do plan to use it. It was the same cost as a trailer and a lot cooler. It won't get a full resto right now. Im going to put the custom trim, big back window, push bumper, 19.5 wheels, 292 and locker rear from the 65 in it and make it look a little better. Here is a pic of one I found that is kind of what it will look like just different colors.

Re: 66 C30 Wrecker

That awesome, i like the wheels. I'm not going to use mine to haul much, the insurance up here is to expensive, and i don't want to pay for commercial plates. But i did use it for the first time today.

Someone on this site was going to start a wrecker, flatbed registry. Will be cool when we get them all together.

Re: 66 C30 Wrecker

I like the wheels too. I have a set that were on my 65 but they are 18 inch split rims. I'm going to run the 19.5's. They are safer and cheaper tires.
I have enough of my own junk to haul so I'm going to register it private, it's a lot cheaper. I haven't checked on insurance yet. it's titled under 10,000 so I think I can avoid commercial rates.

Thats the easy way to move a bed.I cant wait to start using mine. I can think of tons of things I can do with that boom and winch. plus mine has a air tank with hose reel. If i can find brackets I want to mount a truck air compressor on the engine.

A registry would be cool. Ive had a hard time finding info on the old ones, also a source for parts. I want to get dollies but can only find the new high dollar ones.

Nice I currently run a small towing company, allthough what I do is mostly parking enforement, it sure is handy having a wrecker around for working on your own projects though.

I drove it to the shop after work about 15 miles. It was running rich and the tires are square but had no problems.

I got a lot of thumbs up when I drove it. Luckily I have plenty of 64-66 parts so I should be able to get it together quick.

Re: 66 C30 Wrecker

I got my chains and spent most of the day moving junk around so I could get the 65 out. Once I get it Inspected power steering is a priority. Or I can just cancel my gym membership. I did notice it has a factory sway bar. I was wondering why the door handles weren't scraping the pavement on turns.

Re: 66 C30 Wrecker

I'm registered as a private truck 10,001 so there is a lot less BS involved. In VA other states are different, I just need private truck tags and there is a minimum insurance requirement of $70,000. FMCSA classifies it as private (non business) so it's my understanding I don't need DOT numbers I'm still checking on that. Even if they are required I will be OK as long as I don't cross state lines. If I ever decide to change it to for hire that's when the costs skyrocket.

DOT regulates business vehicles over 10,000

They are Grade 70 chains with J and T hooks.

Hook to to the axle, control arm, or frame. Wrap the chain tight around the hook at the bottom of the sling.Wrap the chain around the top sling hook and through the ring then hook to the chain with the extra on the end. I will take pics tomorrow. I also bought a extra set and cut the J hook off to use for safety chains. they feed into the holes with slot at the bottom of the body.

The car on the back is a 68 Mustang
