S10 Gas Tank? Will it work?

Hi all!

I've been debating on the gas tank for my '49 GMC. The simple solution is to put it in the back under the bed between the frame, but I would really like to keep a spare tire back there, so...

My thoughts are to use an s10 side mount tank between the frame and the drive shaft. I've done some preliminary measuring and it "should" fit.

Has anybody else done this? Any clearance issues?

Here is my build:
49 GMC Long Bed
Stock frame
Updated leaf springs
79 Camaro rear end

Any input would be appreciated.

Re: S10 Gas Tank? Will it work?

I was going to use the s10 tank on mine but then I decided that I didn't want to have the filler sticking out of the side. Which isn't a bad thing, they were like that stock 47 and I think 48. But they were on the other side. Plus I didn't want to cut a hole in my bed to find out that I was off a little and have to weld in patches to fix it. So I made a box to hide my gas tank in. I haven't seen anyone else with this kind of thing.

@nickp51chevy Thanks for your input. I saw your thread when I was searching around, nice truck build BTW.

Seems like people only use the s10 tank on the s10 frame swap.

My thinking was that I could put the filler neck out of the apron between the running board and the bed of the truck. But there again, I would have to buy one, mock it up, fit, fiddle, etc just to see if it would work.

I hope somebody on here has done this, because it would be ideal.

I think that if you did that the tank would be hanging out of the bottom of the truck. I can take a pic of the tank and post it for you to see. The filler neck is kinda high on the tank.

Have you looked at the blazer tank? I've heard that it works well in the back of the bed between the frame rails.

Blazer S10 tank fits perfectly back there.

Re: S10 Gas Tank? Will it work?

Thanks for the input guys.

Looks like I'm just gonna have to put it where I wanted to keep the spare. I'll just come up with a tasteful way of keeping the spare in the bed.

Thanks again for the input.
