Carb questions!
Okay I have a 71 lb 3/4T camper special- minus the camper now 350/TH350. How can I tell which quadrajet is on the engine? I know it's original but I can't find any markings. The carb is giving me problems and I'm going to replace it.
Which would be the better carb Holley 650 (1850) or the Holley 750 (3310) both are vacuum secondary carbs. Thanks guys!! |

You may have to take the carb off and clean it up, but there should be a number stamped on the base plate starting with 1708 or 1705 or possibly starting with 700 depending on if it's ever been changed. That's the carb serial number and the one the guys at the parts counter will be wanting. I personally like the Rochester Quadrajets over a Holley. The small primaries make for good fuel mileage and the large secondaries give good performance........not to mention the QJ will practically run upside down whereas a Holley will starve for fuel if put on too much of an incline. Lots of people complain about a quadrajet, but if they are such a POS, why did GM use that carb for the last 40+ years?

Neither IMO. Get a rebuilt Q-jet. I like the JET 750. The Holleys won't make any more power than the Q-jet and they seem to require more frequent rebuilding. They also won't get as good of economy. And you'll have to modify your fuel line and linkage.

Holley puts out a damn nice 650 spreadbore to fit that app. i would have to check to be sure, but i think the # 8679(vac sec). I got mine in 1982.....in that many yrs, its been rebuilt a few times, & been on quite a few trucks! Its a good milage carb too.....it was on the kid's SB chev powered ranger(yup, do a ferd right!) till it got some trash ran through it. I stuck my new 500 2 brl on the ranger, & rebuilt the spreadbore for my plow. well the kid has been *****in about milage on that ranger.......but my plow is doin fine HEHE! crazyL

Thanks guys! The only reason I want to change is- I was tinkering around under the hood and must have screwed something up- when i put my foot all the way to the floor the truck falls on it's face- makes a couple noises and dies- or if I'm on the freeway it'll clear itself up in about 10 seconds and then go roaring off- dunno what's wrong but i'm tired of it.
