Question HEI and RPM's

I finally was tinkered with the HEI I put in the truck last year because it was running like crap. Anyway can you tell me what the RPM's should be at idle on this truck? should it be set at what the factory decal inside engine compartment says or what? It ran a lot better (turned it clockwise some). Now i have to do the timing.

Should I set the timing between 8 and 12 advance?

Thanks in advance,
Pat

Also almost got the VW engine finished, just have to pur the muffler and flywheel on and it will be ready to go back in the bug.

If the eng is stock, somewhere 'tween 8 & 12 should work with the HEI. If you have a hotter cam , you may go to 14 initial. Just listen for spark rattle, & keep advancing as long as it doesnt rattle. If you want to set it up, I would suggest a Crane adjustable advance/spring kit & follow the basic instructions. You should set up in the range of 10-12 initial, with a 32 degree total(all in around 3000), & cut the vac advance can to 10-12 degrees with the advance limiter......& i would run the vac advance to a full manifold nipple @ the carb. Your app may handle a little more or less timing, but you should be in the ballpark. Good luck, crazyL

Sorry I didn't give setup. stock 350 w/ 4bbl carb (original).

I think the carb is dumping gas.

Thanks
