Putting Cab on the 58

Well I have the cab for my 58 ready,also have the frame ready.I have had a couple sleepless night thinking about how to set cab on frame without hurting the cab.we have a tractor with a 4' long fork and 3 old men......any ideas?

They aren't real heavy.
If you can attach something to the for that is long enough to go all the way through the cab you can use it as long as the doors are off.
I've put mine on and off several times by myself with my engine hoist and some 2x4s that I bolt to it.

Three old men and a 12 pack of beer and some bbq steaks AFTER it's on is a great method too.

It's a tough job for two guys, easy with three and a breeze with four.

do you have a cherry picker? I used to be at the mercy for friends and family to show up and move stuff and the simple 2x4 lifting frame on my cherry picker has changed my life.

The cherry picker/truss works great. I made mine wide enough to lift my fleetside bed also.

I've used mine to lift a 54 car body off a frame and put it back on. The truck cabs are a breeze.

One does it how ever he has the way to do it safely. If you have plenty of smooth shop floor to move around on the cherry picker works great. A buddy to help guide the cherry picker and the others to help guide the cab and no one gets back strain and life is good.

Cherry picker and a strap doesn't work at all and I have a couple of dents in my cab to show for that.

If the forks on the tractor are heavy enough to handle it maybe an extension piece on the fork with a ring for a strap to lift the cab and roll the frame under it and let it down. You have to be able to have an angle where the cab won't hit anything though.

Working by myself in the back yard I lifted my cab up on a pair of planks blocking it up as I went until I got it high enough to roll the frame under it and then set it down on som wood blocks on the frame to pull the planks out and then took the blocks out using a jack. Lots of work but I was able to do it safely by myself on a rather uneven surface with a sheet of cardboard to lay on under it. I didn't have shiny new paint then though.

and I think there is more potential for back strain using 4 people than a lone guy with a cherry picker, my family and I lifted the 49 cab and it took 6 of us (fenders and hood were still attached) and a couple of us almost died. not really, but we all sat down afterwards. with the cherry picker and lift frame, I have done it about 20 times.

here is a tip I forgot, take a strap with a hook and hook it to the leg of the cherry picker, it will help you rotate the picker easier than shoving. mr48 is right though you need some smooth concrete and you cant change the laws of physics, if you have even a small incline thats the way the picker will go when loaded.
